PiFan (Pucheon International Fantastic Film Festival) to transform Pucheon into a city of cinema over 10 days by July 23, is presenting a total of 172 movies from 32 countries (including 89 full-length films and 83 shorts films).
According to the Film Festival's intention to hold a film festival in which manias and the citizens can share it, the Secretariat of the Film Festival has prepared this year a variety of events through which the populace can take part by adding cinemas families deserve seeing in large numbers.
This year's PiFan suffered from difficulties in its early stages as some movie directors refuse to take part in this Film Festival as an insubordination to former Film Festival's executive committee chairman dismissal during his tenure.
Yet thanks to the efforts of the Film Festival's Secretariat and administration support of Pucheon City, the 9th PIFan has come to equip features as an international Film Festival. PiFan consists of Puchon choice, World Fantastic Cinema, Fantastic Short Films, Family Section, Eroica Special, Tales of Egypt, Ko Young Nam Retrospective, Park Chul-soo Special Selection, Funny Test, Trojan's Attract, LAKIFF and so forth. Its closing films are composed of 'The Wind Mill Palm Forest' directed by Jonathan YOU and 'Open Water' directed by Chris Kentis.
Over the past 8 years, Puchon international Fantastic Film Festival has offended the tradition and highly exclaimed the new, fresh counter-cultural movement which enables the youth express their suppressed desires under the name of manners and wish to go beyond the limited boundary.
Against the stereotypical concepts on the culture, which could be described with words like restraints, suppression and uniformity, PiFan dared to seek the freedom of minority and endeavored to take in the variety of culture.
However, PiFan also faced its ugly inertia to be a formal and standard festival as time went by and was regressed to the route former European Fantastic Film Festivals took. in this respect, an official at the Secretariat points out: "We, PiFan, painfully had to admit that we were following the exact route its formidable forerunners took. Under the banner of looking for new cinematic styles which ventured to go beyond the limit, PiFan introduced the Necrophilia in the end".
These degradation of its spirits are the pre-destined route as all things lose its purity along the development of time. The past PiFan always stressed that PiFan is the film festival where the audience is the top priory and showed some actions to strengthen the family section but actually we reinforced horror films and tried to be a big shot including the mainstream movies in our programs, this official explained.
Fortunately, PiFan finally realized PiFan also must change and find the alternative way to keep a genuine Fantastic Spirit it cherished from the first.
PiFan is on the verge of change, facing the 9th round of festival. PiFan painfully reflects on PiFan's past mistakes and wants to be reborn as the truthful Fantastic Film Festival. PiFan will revive as a spiritual liberated district which releases our suppressed desires and stimulates a free will for Puchon citizens and other audiences, the Secretariat said.
