Portal to Donate Celebrities' Compensation to Charity

Some 66 celebrities have decided to let potential compensation for illegal use of their images go to people in need. They include actors Bae Yong-joon, Jung Woo-sung, So Ji-sub, Kim Myung-min, Song Il-kook and Zo In-sung and actresses Jeon Do-yeon, Moon Geun-young and Kim Tae-hee.

The Seoul High Court announced Monday that it had mediated an agreement between the 66 celebrities and a website they sued to drop the charges if the portal donates W10 million to a social welfare organization by the end of the year.

The 66 sued the site after it published personal information and pictures without their consent.

In the first instance, the court ruled the portal must pay W1 million in compensation to each suitor -- a total of W66 million. After the site appealed, the Seoul High Court proposed the charges be dropped if the portal donates W10 million for people in need and another W10 million to the association of entertainment agencies.
