Broadcast in 2005, Precious Family miraculously stood atop TV ratings despite not featuring big name stars or provocative storylines. Simply focused on delivering a realistic portrayal of family, the drama not only garnered the critics' approval but also captured the hearts of many viewers. The secret to its mainstream appeal lies in screenwriter Kim Soo Hyun, one of Korea's most celebrated drama writers. In her trademark distinctive dialogue, Kim sheds light on the importance of family and marriage through the heartening tale of one woman who experiences many trials in her life including her husband's infidelity, friction with difficult in-laws, and the hardship of raising an autistic son. The drama also reflects on the double standards in our society where the responsibility of childcare often falls on the mother's shoulders. Iconic 90s actress Kim Hee Ae (My Husband's Woman) heads an impressive cast that includes Hur Jun Ho (Jumong) and veteran actors Song Jae Ho and Kim Hye Sook.
The insurmountable responsibility cast upon parents with mentally challenged offspring can be quite daunting. For Chang Su (Huh Jun Ho), father of a young daughter and an autistic son, the pressure was too much. He ends up cheating on his wife Sung Shil (Kim Hee Ae) with another woman, and eventually the two split up. But the bitter medicine of divorce soon brings Chang Su to realize the preciousness of family and his love for his two children. Full of regrets and desire for redemption, Chang Su closes in on Sung Shil in hopes of rekindling their love. Just then, Chang Su faces another fallback in his life as his company nears bankruptcy. Now the dice is in Sung Shil's hands who must decide whether to turn her back on the man who once stabbed her in the heart, or to embrace the changed man that he has become over the years.
