Protecting our Marine Places: A Shared Korea-US Vision for Conservation and Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea

Summary

The Republic of Korea and the United States have a rich history of cooperation on environmental, ocean, coastal, and marine research and conservation programs, including 11 years of partnership between the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs on marine protected areas, sustainable and integrated coastal management, marine observations, oil spill response, and other efforts to protect and conserve the marine environment in both countries.

As Korean attitudes about conservation continue to evolve, especially since the 2007 oil spill which devastated the east coast of Taean County and led to a major cleanup effort involving Korean, American, and international community help, a rising sense of environmental responsibility and a shared Korea-US vision for conservation and sustainability culminate in this summers Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, a Worlds Fair event with the central theme, The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities.

Four experts will discuss the history and substance of Korea-US cooperation on marine conservation, its growing relevance today, and the significance of the Yeosu Expo and other conservation milestones in 2012. A light Korean dinner reception will be served after the program.
