Love Truly (AKA: Really Really Like You) (DVD) (MBC TV Drama) (Multi-audio) (English Subtitles) (Malaysia Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Playful, charming, and laugh-out-loud funny, MBC drama Love Truly, a.k.a. Really Really Like You, brings romance to the Blue House. K-pop singer Eugene (Wonderful Life) sheds her pop idol image by embracing the character of an endearingly brassy and bumbling country girl, complete with a spot-on village accent. Competing for Eugene's affections are Ryu Jin (Seo Dong Yo), who portrays the President's son, and rising star Lee Min Ki (Be Strong Geum Soon), who has been raising eyebrows recently with his performance opposite Chae Rim in Spring of Dalja. This romantic triangle plays out in the hallowed hallways of the Blue House (official residence of South Korea's president), bringing an interesting new twist to the story.

Cheerful country girl Bong Soon (Eugene) rescues an injured man (Ryu Jin) near her village one day, and the two become good friends. Little does she know, the man she rescued is none other than the President's son Jang Joon Won. Later on, Bong Soon moves to Seoul to look for her long-lost parents and becomes an assistant cook at the Blue House. She constantly clashes with Joon Won's hot-tempered bodyguard Bong Ki (Lee Min Ki), but the two keep growing closer over time. Already torn between her crush on Joon Woon, who has a young daughter and an ill wife, and a blossoming relationship with Bong Ki, Bong Soon gets even more confused when the mystery of her identity begins to unravel.

There’s no ‘nobody.’ Everybody is once an important person to somebody.
The Life Story of Beautiful-minded People; ‘The true meaning and hope of life can be learned from ordinary people.’
What makes Love Truly different from other stories is its characters; those who work in the Blue House (Korean presidential residence). This drama introduces the viewers the place considered mysterious and tabooed in TV dramas. It also features the people working inside the most unknown place in the country.

Even though the presidential residence is the main setting of the story, the main characters of the story aren’t the presidential family. The story focuses on the true residents of the Blue House; those who have always been in the very center of the history, but remained nameless for many years. In this story, the viewers will meet the presidential cook, kitchen staff, a carpenter, a photographer, bodyguards and other workers.

These people are working in the most unusual and interesting place in Korea. Nobody recognizes their hard work, but they strongly believe that the food they cook, the door they fix, and a phone call they answer can make a difference. They take their work very seriously and always do their best. The story features the simple, but noble spirit of those who love their job and work hard. Therefore, the Blue House in this story represents the workplace of the hardest working people in the country, rather than the secret and off-limits presidential residence.

Romance in the Blue House
When it comes to TV dramas over 20 episodes long, I tend to either skip over them knowing that I can't invest the time, or I start and never finish. I'm more likely to hold out for period dramas, but I lose interest quickly with long romantic dramas as length too often means descent into padding, cliche, and overblown melodrama. Which is why Really, Really Like You really, really stands out as a romantic comedy. Clocking in at 34 episodes, Really, Really Like You is a tad long for a non-sitcom romance, but I whizzed through the whole drama in record time, and was rather sad to see it come to an end. I Really, Really Like You didn't receive as much as love as it should have when it aired in Korea in 2006. Amongst overseas K-drama fans, it's also a lesser-known title in comparison to series with Korean Wave stars, but it ranks high on my list of favorite Korean TV dramas.

Former pop idol Eugene slips comfortably into the role of homely but adorable country girl Bong Soon who moves from her mountain home to Seoul to search for her long-lost parents. A hillbilly through and through with her thick accent and pet duck, Bong Soon nonetheless manages to make her way in the city thanks to her kind heart and superior cooking skills. She meets up again with President's son Joon Won (Ryu Jin), whom she rescued and befriended back in the country, and even lands a job as an assistant cook in the Blue House, the President's official residence. Unsurprisingly, Bong Soon falls for Joon Won, who is tiredly bearing the emotional burden of caring for his daughter and mentally ill wife (Jung So Young). But as time passes, she begins to develop an ambiguous relationship with Joon Won's mouthy bodyguard Bong Ki (Lee Min Ki) with whom she is constantly bickering. And where exactly are her parents again?

Ryu Jin inspires suitable angst and sympathy as the resident good guy on a tough break - which fits in well with his general air of being a solid likeable actor who doesn't inspire a following - but it's Eugene and Lee Min Ki's onscreen chemistry that really makes this drama a winner. Eugene makes for a cute and bumbling rom-com heroine, and Lee Min Ki manages to be both annoying and endearing as the gratingly loud hothead who turns out be quite the sensitive leading man. Among the three leads, Lee Min Ki would have been the wild card at the time, on the brink of breaking out after Be Strong, Geum-soon and memorable stints on the variety show X-man, and he brings a roguish, slightly zany energy to the drama that livens up the proceedings. Many of Eugene and Lee Min Ki's scenes and dialogue are laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Really, Really Like You does a good job of balancing the comedy and drama so that the series never gets too serious to watch with a smile. Setting the drama in the Blue House and having the President around as a regular character also add an interesting dimension to the story, though the drama wisely steers clear of sensationalizing the setting, effectively painting the Blue House as an extraordinary, yet normal household and workplace. The same could be said for Really, Really Like You overall. Without the eye-catching cast names, media buzz, or story gimmicks, Really, Really Like You is just an enjoyable romantic comedy, a normal K-drama that turns out to be quite extraordinary.

Funny and Cute Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This drama is really enjoyable and easy to watch. Lee Min-Ki and Eugene are both hilarious, and they make a cute couple. I was especially surprised at how good Eugene was. This series didn't get that much attention which is too bad because it's actually a lot better than many of the more high-profile dramas. Great if you want to watch something funny and light-hearted instead of all that tearjerking melodramatic stuff.
