Righteous Ties Limited Edition DTS

YesAsia Editorial Description

If there's a Korean director dealing with how comedy can affect any genre with the most unique of touches, that's certainly Jang Jin. When he debuted, his theater roots showed probably a little too much in The Happenings. But as time went on, Jang redrew the map of North-South-divide dramas (The Spy), gangster films (Guns & Talks), thrillers (Murder, Take One), and particularly melodramas with the memorable Someone Special. After the monstrous success of Welcome to Dongmakgol, a film he produced and helped write, Jang is back to the directorial chair with his latest effort, Righteous Ties.

Chi Sung (Jang regular Jung Jae Young of Welcome To Dongmakgol) is a legendary gangster in Jeolla Province, but loyalty to the gang moves him to take one for the boys and he ends up in prison. Once there, amongst a crowd of unusual inmates he finds old friend Soon Tal (Ryu Seung Yong of Murder, Take One), and the two reconnect broken ties. In the meantime, Chi Sung's fierce loyalty is met with betrayal, as his boss sends someone to rid him in prison. It's time for revenge, as Chi Sung and Soon Tal plan an escape along with other inmates. But challenging the organization means facing off against longtime friend Ju Joong (Jung Jun Ho of My Boss, My Teacher), who has risen the ranks to right-hand man.

Jang Jin describes the film as an "honam noir", a Southwest Korean-style gangster drama as opposed to the Southeastern flavor of Kwak Kyung Taek's Friend or Choi Ho's Bloody Tie. Kinetic and hard-hitting, Righteous Ties features all of Jang's regulars, like Jung Jae Young (who worked with him on all his films) and Jung Jun Ho, who's starting to widen his range as an actor after years of comedies.

Professional Review of "Righteous Ties Limited Edition DTS"

    March 1, 2007

Righteous Ties is yet another in the long and seemingly endless line of Korean gangster films, this time with director Jang Jin attempting to put a fresh spin on the usual themes. Certainly, he is one of the few directors likely to be able to do just that, having turned out a number of eccentric, genre-bending pieces in the past such as Murder, Take One and Guns and Talks, both of which, though not entirely successful, did offer unconventional and challenging entertainment. Here, he shies away from the usual depiction of gangsters as a fiercely loyal lot, and instead focuses on cynical betrayals and immoral scheming, with the end result being a quirky and frequently quite funny film which just about manages to stand out from the pack and carve out its own niche.

The plot begins with top ranking gangster Chi Sung (Jung Jae Young, recently in Welcome To Dongmakgol which was written and produced by Jang Jin) being sent to jail after carrying out a slashing attack and refusing to name his boss as being the man who gave the order. In prison, he comes across Soon Tal (Ryu Seung Yong, also in the director's Murder, Take One), an old comrade who he had long thought had been executed for a gang murder. The two rekindle their friendship, and as Chi Sung slowly adjusts to life inside, he begins to form bonds with several of the rather odd inmates. Meanwhile on the outside, in a shocking act of disloyalty, his boss decides to send out an order for his death as a means of sweetening a business deal with the man he was jailed for stabbing. Appalled and hungry for revenge, Chi Sung and Soon Tal plan a daring escape, aiming to bring him to task for his reprehensible behaviour. Unfortunately, to get to him, they first have to contend with Ju Joong (Jung Jun Ho, My Boss, My Teacher), another old friend who has since taken Chi Sung's place as top henchman.

Righteous Ties is a film about family in its various forms rather than criminal activity, with Jang being far more interested in exploring the various character relationships than gang activities as such, with most of the running time following the protagonists behind bars. In general, aside from the friendship between the three main characters, gangsters are portrayed as being without any code of morality, and the usual cinematic myth of them as grim faced knights is effectively deconstructed in a way which lays bare the cynical workings of the criminal hierarchy. Indeed, Jang repeatedly refers to gangs as companies, clearly showing that they have their own bureaucracy and exist solely as a means of generating money for the men at the top. Although this approach is by no means wholly new or fresh, with other films having also taken a decidedly cynical look at gang life, Jang arguably goes further in terms of deglamourising the key values supposed at its heart, and manages to do so without wallowing in angst or sorrow at the acts of betrayal, which come as far less of a surprise to the viewer than to the characters.

What really sets the film apart is its sense of humour, with Jang populating the prison with a very strange set of inmates such as a serial killer and communist politician who are inseparable best friends. As with the director's previous efforts, the plot gets stranger as time progresses, with a series of quite bizarre events leading the film into genuinely unexpected territory in a manner which works nicely to distance it even further from the usual form. This idiosyncratic shift brings with it even more comedy, with the prison escape playing out as a wacky caper which leads the characters into some pretty absurd situations.

Despite all of this, Jang never loses sight of the central themes, and it is to his credit that although certainly unconventional, the film never degenerates into incoherence or implausibility. Things are kept grounded to a degree through the expected violent scenes of baseball bat beatings and stabbings, which ensure that the viewer never forgets the harsh realities of gang life, and that the humour of the film never undermines its dramatic core.

It is this kind of cinematic juggling act which Jang is so good at, and which allows Righteous Ties to work as something more complicated and ultimately more rewarding than the average gangster film. Whilst its premise and moody DVD box art may well put off viewers who are understandably tired of the same old tales of bloody loyalty, for those willing to take a chance, it offers solid entertainment and proves that there is still some spark of life in the genre.

    Jang Jin Goes Gangster Noir
It doesn't happen nearly often enough, but once in a while I come across a work that reminds me why I love film. Directed by the always interesting Jang Jin, Righteous Ties is a high-strung, long-winded, hardboiled, noir action melodrama that would make Johnnie To weep. Well, I nearly weeped anyways.

Loyal gangster Chi Sung (Jung Jae Young) goes to prison for the organization, but while he's behind bars his boss betrays him. With the help of new and old friends, Chi Sung plots various prison breaks that go humorously awry. A positively spectacular fluke, however, brings down the prison walls, allowing Chi Sung and company to go free. He has some old scores to settle with the boss, but first he must go through new right-hand man and longtime friend Ju Joong (Jung Jun Ho, looking uncannily like a young Jackie Chan).

Righteous Ties starts and ends with violence, but what happens in between runs the gamut of human emotions, and the film often dramatically, but smoothly changes tones in the matter of seconds. Much tragedy can be found, but the dark and serious moments are lightened considerably by daily goings in prison as the inmates grow closer in amusingly heartwarming fashion. Like Guns & Talks, the film is full of sly spot-on humor, whimsically precise characters, and fun, free-wheeling moments. The prison break sequence in particular is simply priceless - you know it's going to happen, but you just can't possibly imagine it would happen in such a fabulously random manner.

From the lighting to the colors to the camerawork, everything screams style. The film is beautifully shot in noirish shades of blues, grays, and blacks with an olive green overcast. Light falls off metal surfaces in sharp curves, throwing shadows onto half-lit profiles. Shots are framed with obvious care - where each and every person is located on screen has clearly been thought out. The film also features a great score, ranging from cheery jazz (during a bar brawl) to 80s-style techno to dramatic instrumentals.

Jang Jin sets the film with just the right tempo - a tense, but unhurried pace with sudden spurts of violence and emotion. This can be felt very directly through the story (smooth, smooth, emotional burst), the sounds (quiet, quiet, scream), and the photography (long shot, long shot, close-up). The effect is engaging and kinetic, and Righteous Ties teems with a subtle, yet brawling energy that comes spilling out in just the right moments. The story dances around in circles for much of the time - indeed for most of the film, we're just in prison biding - but it's a beautiful ballet of brotherhood and bloody justice. And when chance comes, the bonds forged jump into hard-hitting action, even as everything comes crashing down, in the most aesthetic way possible of course.
