According to market researcher Strategy Analytics, Huawei ranked top in the fourth quarter last year with a 15.2 percent market share. Second was Xiaomi (14.8 percent), followed by Apple (13.1 percent), Vivo (10 percent) and Oppo (9.2 percent).

Apple was the only non-Chinese smartphone maker in the Top 5.

Strategy Analytics named only the top five players and ranked the rest as "others".

Samsung ranked fifth in the third quarter but was then overtaken by Oppo.

For the entire year, Xiaomi ranked top, followed by Huawei, Apple, Vivo and Oppo.

Samsung led the field as recently as 2014, but now the four Chinese firms account for 46 percent of the market there.
