According to the Seoul city government on Thursday, the number of people using subway line Nos. 1 through 8 last year rose 2.5 percent on-year to average 6.6 million a day, with the accumulated number reaching 47.6 billion.

Subway usage peaked in March at 6.93 million users a day on average, as this is the month when schools open again after the winter vacation. High oil prices also led more people to leave their cars at home and use public transport.

Line No. 2 had the highest number of users, accounting for 31 percent of the total traffic on the metro. Of the 238 subway stations in the capital, Gangnam Station was the most frequently used, with 128,000 people passing through it a day on average. Seoul Station came second and Jamsil Station third.
