Singer, Publicist Target Foreign Envoys for East Sea Promotion

Singer Kim Jang-hoon and freelance Korean publicist Seo Kyoung-duk have launched a fresh round of campaigning to promote the East Sea to foreign government officials, envoys, lawmakers, scholars and other opinion leaders.

"We've sent data and materials translated in English via mail to ambassadors, foreign ministers and other important decision makers of 192 nations", Seo told The Korea Times, Wednesday. "We will continue to send data to foreign policymakers and opinion leaders".

The name of the sea separating Korea and Japan has been one of the most controversial issues between the two states.

Seo, also a professor at Sungshin Women's University, said singer Kim, who has funded publicity ads for the East Sea in international dailies, also sponsored the latest campaign to reaffirm the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan should be called the East Sea, not the Sea of Japan.

With sponsorship from the vocalist, Seo ran promotional ads for the East Sea in the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post last month.

Seo said the latest promotion campaign is a move to counter the Japanese government's publicity drive.

"The Japanese government has made PDF files in six different languages for the publicity of the Sea of Japan since April. In reaction, we need a more objective publicity campaign for Dokdo and the East Sea".
