A spokesman for the Asan Medical Center said Thursday Shin arrived in the emergency room after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was already unresponsive and had stopped breathing when he arrived.

"He was unable to regain consciousness after surgery and his pupils are not responding", the spokesman added.

Doctors said Shin had a widespread infection in peritoneum and his intestine had already started narrowing. Air had flooded into his heart causing cardiac arrest.

Rumors spread quickly online that Shin had undergone surgery to staple his stomach to lose weight, which led to serious side effects threatening his health.

But his agency in a statement said while Shin did have his stomach stapled two years ago, this had "nothing to do" with his heart attack.

The rock singer started dieting when he dramatically put on pounds after an operation in 2012 to treat an inflammation of the gall bladder.
