SK Communications sealed an MOU with Hanaro Media, which runs Hana TV, on IPTV service development, operation, and technology exchange.
With this MOU, SK Communications will offer to Hana TV the company's various Internet services, including the searching function, while Hana TV will offer its Hana-TV-related Internet service technologies to SK Communications. Accordingly, SK Communications is expected to play a role in developing, operating, and offering services and contents in the IPTV market.
Currently, SK Communications owns Cyworld, Korea's largest SNS site, NateOn, a messenger platform, and various Internet services and contents, including Egloos, a blog site, as well as Empas and Nate.com, major portal sites.
"With the participation of SK Communications, the three major portal companies' full-scale competition in the IPTV business, the crux of the current fusion of the broadcasting and communication fields, has begun", said an official of SK Communications.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom, the mother company of SK Communications, which recently bought Hanaro Telecom, considers this MOU between SK Communications and Hanaro TV a strategic move by it to expand its business opportunity by interconnecting SK Group's resources. As of now, SK Telecom owns SK Communications as well as various content and service companies, including Entreev (game), Paxnet (stock), Seoul Records (music), and IHQ (entertainment).
