Is love truly ageless? KBS's 2001 drama Solitude examines a love that knows no boundaries. No stranger when it comes to taking on a role of a woman who finds romance with a younger man (e.g., in films like Hellcats and An Affair), Lee Mi Sook plays a forty-something career woman in Solitude, attempting once again to overcome the age barrier. Playing opposite Lee as the daring young lover who casts an infectious spell upon her is Ryoo Seung Bum (Sunshine of Love, Beautiful Days). Filled with heart-tugging dialogue, beautiful background music, and shimmering images reminiscent of Impressionist paintings, Solitude represents the signature style of producer Pyo Min Soo and writer Noh Hee Kyung, one of the best creative teams in Korean television.

While on a grand bike tour of Jeju island, a sudden shower forces Young Woo (Ryoo Seung Bum) and his older brother to look for temporary shelter. The boys spot a nearby mansion, where Young Woo meets Kyung Min (Lee Mi Sook) for the first time. One year later, Young Woo and Kyung Min meet again in Jeju and the two end up touring the island together. When Kyung Min invites Young Woo for tea at her holiday mansion, Young Woo wastes no time in expressing his attraction to her. But Kyung Min takes her young friend's abrupt advances in stride, merely brushing them off as a schoolboy crush. Time passes, and Young Woo returns to Korea from his overseas studies. Scoring an entry-level position at a consulting firm, Young Woo arrives at the office for his first day of work. But when he opens the door to meet his new boss, it's none other than Kyung Min.

일년에 한번씩 저전거 하이킹을 즐기는 영우는 형 영철과 제주도 일주 도중 소나기를 만나고 비를 피하기 위해 찾아 든 별장에서 경민과 처음 만나게 된다. 영우는 경민의 첫인상에 묘한 호감을 느끼고... 그로부터 1년 후...제주도로 출장을 떠난 경민과 영우는 또 한번 마주치게 되고 영우는 1년 전 만났던 경민을 기억해 낸다. 우연히 섬 일주를 함께 하게 된 영우와 경민은 나름대로 즐거운 시간을 보내고 경민의 별장에서 함께 차까지 마시게 된다. 영우는 경민에게 직접적으로 호감을 표시하고 경민은 어린 영우의 당돌함을 대수롭지 않게 흘려보낸다. 독일 유학을 마치고 돌아온 영우는 초등학교 동창생 진영이 근무하는 기업이미지 컨설던트 회사 <휴먼>에 신입사원으로 입사하게 되고, 입사 첫날 사무실에서 또 다시 경민과 마주치게 되는데...
