YesAsia Editorial Description

Best known for picking controversial topics for his films, director Kim Gi Deok was the first South Korean director to be awarded Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2004. His new work Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring traces the life of a Buddhist monk to draw an analogy between the changing of the seasons and the cycle of life.

The film tells a tale about the life of a Buddhist monk from childhood to an elderly age. As he grows, he experiences desires and emotions in his childhood, adolescence and adulthood. He kills a little animal out of innocent curiosity, falls for a girl, attempts suicide after committing murder and eventually returns to monkhood. Paralleled to the nature's cycle of four seasons, the development of his life reflects men's general patterns in life.

Shot at a floating temple on a lake in Mt. Chuwang National Park, Kim Gi Deok's latest film Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring features the director's debut as an actor. He plays the middle-aged monk and displays impressive athleticism in the winter scenes. Kim's previous eight works including The Isle, Address Unknown, and Bad Guy often deal with contentious topics that arouse viewers' contemplation.

"[B]eautiful, lyrical..." - Glenn, Kenny (Premiere/Entertainment Weekly Critic), Premiere, 05/01/2004

"The wistful soundtrack meshes sublimely with the visual narration, conveying a deeper sense of the pupil's trials." - Marcos, Vera (Entertainment Weekly), Entertainment Weekly, 09/10/2004

beautiful sceneries Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
There were lots of buttons to press at the beginning of this DVD and they are all written in Korean. I couldn't try pressing (or guess) all of them so I just had to watch the whole film without subtitles. Fortunately it is not too difficult to understand what was going on. The little monk was punished the same way as what he did to the three little creatures and he then realized what he had done wrong. You really wanted to kill him when he did horrible things but when the child cried so genuinely and that he knew he was in the wrong, you totally forgave him. The cycle went round again at the end when another little monk did virtually what the previous little monk had done. You can tell Koreans are not very kind to animals or pets. The scenes are stunning however, especially autumn with the most beautiful colours and crystal clear water.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film is just excellent. There is beautiful camera shots and a great story line. Basicaly it is a story of a young monks life, and what happens when he grows up and discovers different things. It has emotion in this film, some parts are happy, some sad, but will give you a good fealing at the end.
Buy this film, it will really get you thinking about life and what it is all about.

great scenery. That's about it Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Loved how the movie was shot. The scenery was quite a sight. The storyline is simple and soemtimes get's boring because not much really happens. The movie have good messages except prob when the girl comes into the young buddists life who eventually causes trouble for him. Great movie for the visual somewhat boring for the storyline.

This film not need any words to say why this film is a must see. It's a film that speaks about life from a buddhist perspective. I enjoyed this film for its scenery, story and lessons about life. This is one of the best Korean films of all times!
