In a blow to director Park Chan-wook's long-awaited "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", the movie has been given an R rating, for restricted to those over 18.
Promoter AllThatCinema said Thursday the Korea Media Rating Board told the company the movie was rated R although it initially applied for a 15 rating.
The board reportedly cited violence, use of guns and the grueling depiction of the heroine Geumja's life in prison, where she is sent to on a charge of infanticide. Park has said the last installment of his revenge trilogy was aimed at those over 15. The promoters said the board's decision was regrettable but they would not appeal.
