Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (Chinjeorhan Geumjassi, 2005) will premiere in the Netherlands on December 28, 2006. The Filmmuseum in Amsterdam programmed all three of PARK's 'vengeance trilogy' films as part of the premiere of "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance". Therefore, "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (Boksooneun naui geot, 2001) will also have its Dutch premiere, only "Old Boy" (2003) was released in Dutch cinemas before.
Dutch film critics seem to agree that "Old Boy" was the masterpiece in the trilogy, but emphasize that Lady Vengeance has many qualities too. Special attention is paid to the esthetics of PARK's visual style and the dark humor. The film will have a small release in the Netherlands.
"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is the final installment of PARK's trilogy about revenge. The film's prizes include two awards at the 2005 Venice Film Festival. PARK's international fame rose steeply with the second film "Old Boy", which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. "Old Boy" garnered seven awards at international film festivals. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" began what would lead to the vengeance trilogy.
"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" stars Lee Young-ae as an unjustly convicted woman who sets out to seek revenge after being released from prison. Choi Min-sik the protagonist from "Old Boy" plays the one who framed her. The Moho Film production's scenario was written by Director PARK and Jeong Seo-kyeong.
