YesAsia Editorial Description

With a screenplay provided by Shin Jeong-Gu and Oh Ki-Hwan, this is a thoroughly modern romance in which sparks are certain to fly! The film centers on two characters with similar attitudes toward love and life. First up, there's Seo Min-Joon (Song Il-Guk, from Red Eye), a man who is living a double life of sorts. By day, he's a successful, well-respected architect, but by night, he's a Korean Casanova, whose amazing skills in the art of seduction are seemingly unmatched. However, one fateful day, he crosses paths with the beautiful Ji-Won, a woman who gives Min-Joon a run for his money, much to his surprise!

Son Ye-Jin, star of such films as The Classic, A Moment to Remember, and April Snow, plays Han Ji-Won, a private banker who is as proficient at her job as she is at seducing men. When she meets up with Min-Joon, she sees a prime opportunity to add yet another name to her long list of conquests, but considering the man's own talents in the area of romance, it seems that things aren't going to be quite as easy as Ji-Won expects! Who will come out on top in this hilarious battle of the sexes? Find out in The Art of Seduction, a charming romantic comedy, which features appearances by Park Joon-Gyu (Wet Dreams 2, Sex is Zero,), Noh Joo-Hyun (She's On Duty), Park Yong-Woo (Blood Rain), Hyun Young (Princess Aurora), and Ahn Seon-Young (Jenny, Juno)!

Professional Review of "The Art of Seduction DTS"

    March 2, 2006

Han Ji Won (Son Yae Jin - April Snow and A Moment To Remember) is a private banker, always on the prowl and looking to seduce men. She meets Min Joon (Song Il Gook - Red Eye) a man with his own talents in the area of romance and just as equal to the task when it comes to seduction. It looks like Ji Won has finally met her match. The game is afoot and we will see who comes out victorious in the end.

The Art of Seduction has all the ingredients of a Hollywood romantic comedy. The lead actress is hot. The lead actor is hot (I guess). The circumstances they find themselves in lend heavily towards comedy and laughs. Director and screenwriter Oh Ki Hwan follows the path of typical Hollywood romance for a while but then his story stays the course and does not get muddled in the latter's usual formula. Let me explain. Hollywood romances mostly follow like this. Player meets player. Players play off each other until one or both of them get hurt. Players realize they love each other and the games stop. Players fall in love and you've finished writhing in the cinema aisles come the end of the credits.

Oh avoids falling into the trap of this romantic movie cliché. Don't be mislead, The Art of Seduction is stock romantic comedy from start to finish. But what I found refreshing about the movie was that Oh stayed away from including a turn of drama in his movie to bring any sort of change into his characters. The reason is, his characters know who they are and they're comfortable with this. There is no guilt or second thought about what they are doing to their, for lack of a better term, conquests. And while the end result is a quick romp in the sack, there is no hint that they are sexual predators either. To them it is a game, pure and simple. Well, I don't know about pure, as I have my own zealous ideals about being loved and in love and couldn't see myself in this position. But to Min Joon and Ji Won, it is about the seduction more so than the end result or rewards. It doesn't mean that it is okay then, since their intentions are neither malicious nor cruel. But it makes it easier to swallow when the air of menace is not present.

There is plenty to like in The Art of Seduction. Both Song Il Guk and Son Yae Jin bring a level of charm to the screen and their performances are suited to the subtlety of the comedy of circumstance. And comedy that is well done is simply presented to the viewer and not crammed in their ear. And that is why The Art of Seduction works as well as it does, despite being a piece of romantic fluff. There are some genuinely funny moments in this movie.

What I love about Asian Cinema is that it is not afraid to be ambiguous and open-ended. Oh doesn't fall into the trap of having to wrap everything up all nice and pretty or bring about change. May I use a hockey metaphor here? The game was played. It was all tied up after overtime and the shootout. Both teams went home with one point. And while it may be certainly troubling for novice Western viewers who have to have characters go through some sort of metamorphosis or change, or, have a tidy conclusion to the movie, you are reminded of a simple truth at the end of this movie. Not everything has to change, and folks live their lives the way they see fit, regardless if you agree with it or not, or if it abides to a great moral rule of some sorts. And, in that sense, it probably has more to say about the reality of worldly love than any romantic movie with a tidied up storyline ever could.

Son and Song are incandescent Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "The Art of Seduction", Son Ye Jin and Song Il-Guk play two romantic players who try to out-play each other. It is about as simple a premise as one could find. Making this simple premise interesting requires sharp writing, no-holds-barred acting, and a director who keeps the story moving at hyperspeed.

Fortunately, all of those elements are present in this film. Miss Son and Mr. Song throw themselves into their roles convincingly. And the script keeps topping itself by creating increasingly ridiculous situations for the actors to play as if their lives depended on it.

It's all good fun and it ends up in a place that I hadn't expected. If you like your romantic comedies to have a bit of an edge, then I think you'll enjoy "The Art of Seduction". (Note: In my previous review of this film, I misidentified the lead actor.)

    Funny, Romantic...great! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Son Ye Jin and Song Il Kook were brilliant. Their chemistry was great, and they look really good 2gether. The plot was fun to watch, unlike many kmovies that seem to just go in a completely different direction in the middle of the movie. It was very funny, and well you just have to watch it!
