Professional Review of "The Big Swindle (DVD) (DTS) (Korea Version)"

Offering you a perfect mixture of Hollywood cult movies like Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects, The Big Swindle presents a bank robbery enlivened with a great deal of black humor. As the first feature by writer-director Choi Dong-hun, this Korean crime film wins the heart of moviegoers not only with its plot twists but also the shining cast members including Park Shin-yang from The Uninvited and Yeom Jung-ah from A Tale of Two Sisters. The story starts with a high-speed car chase involving Choi Chang-hyok (Park Shin-yang), the cock of the gang who just robbed 5 billion Korean dollars out of a bank. Pursued by the police and separated from his gang, Choi's car ends up bursting into flames and crashing down an escarpment. Another ringleader, Olmae (Lee Moon-sik), is also hospitalized suffering from severe injury through a car accident. The whereabouts of the other three robbers, however, remains a mystery Hereon, the film cuts back and forth between the past and the present as the conspiracy behind this big swindle is about to be exposed. Choi plans the robbery right after being released from his last prison sentence and he approaches Master Kim (Baek Yun-shik), a super-smooth safe expert, with his plan. The criminal dream team is then formed with the kindhearted informer specialist Olmae, the psychotic Chaebi (Park Won-sang) and the forging expert Huibalyu (Kim Sang-ho). Choi makes a grand first move by having Master Kim work in the targeted bank as a security guard. What seems to be a perfect crime, however, turns out to be a total waterloo. Someone among the five swindlers must have turned his/her back on the team! The movie script featuring a bunch of grifters from all walks of life strongly recalls Reservoir Dogs directed by the Hollywood cult genius Quentin Tarantino. What have become the must-have features in Tarantino's masterpieces are those cool guys in their fancy outfits living in the marginal world with a mouth-full of vulgar language. Violence is coated with glamour and humor, which sets an example for many crime films to follow. The Big Swindle, being one of them, provides a fascinating addition to the Korean cream of the crop cult movies alongside with Friend and Guns and Talks. This debut work of Choi Dong-hun, though not as flashy and bloody as its Hollywood precedents, still shines in its own way with a breezier tone. The black comedy in this movie is conveyed through a postmodern palette heavy on metals and rich colors. Such a character-based tall story may earn considerable laughter but the post-heist cheating is far more important to leave the audience thinking about trust and betrayal. Together with the memorable characterization, The Big Swindle should make one worth-seeing movie for hardcore cult film fans and anyone who enjoys watching how violence can seamlessly be incorporated into a complex drama. | This is just like hollywood's Ocean Eleven and UK's the usual suspects korean version. Quite exciting, twist and turns up to the last part. A movie you shouldn't miss. |

| I watch this movie because I saw Park Shin Yang on "Lovers in Paris". His performance is as top as the "Lovers in Paris" and I have no hesitation to recommend this movie to you all. |

| An excellent movie about con artists who did a well and cleverly planned bank robbery. I heard the film was inspired by a true event in Korea. The ending of the film is unpredictable and you do not know the motive until the end. The film is not chronological so you do have to pay attention and follow the plot. You will get lost if you cannot appreciate the film's sophistication and the intricacy of the plot. I have seen lousy Korean action films which are boring and with poor ending. This film is an exception and possibly the reason why it currently ranks #6 as the best selling domestic film in Korea this year. The wonderful acting of Park Shin Yang and Yeom Jung Ah also contributed to the success of this film. Park is really a good actor (playing 2 different characters so diverse in personality in this film, and also played well in "Romance in Paris" as a totally different character). Anyway, I'm a non-Korean watching this film with English subtitle and totally enjoyed it. |

This is not a bad film. It has similiar tones and themes like "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Usual Suspects" but don't expect it to be a mirror image of these two films. The first half of the film is a bit slow moving however the last half of the film picks up the action and the true nature of the characters start to come out. Initially, all of the characters seem to be shallow, almost callous type people. They lie, cheat and steal to "make a living". Mr. Kim seems to be the worst of the lot scheming to rip people off in frauds and swindles. His tarty "girlfriend" seems to go with the flow: where ever the flow of money is. Gasoline, Swallow and Big Mouth are supporting players that add to the plot with their own "specialities" of the con artist trade (see "The Grifters"). Choi is new person added to the mix and what happens in the end is something that you never would have expected. Remember: is there ever such a thing as honor amongst thieves? |

| The plot is simple, the story is slow, the dialogue is trivial, the action is not exciting and it runs at 2 hours. I consider myself very patient sitting there for 2 hours letting the story unfolded. For a thriller/crime film it is very slow. If you expect a "Pulp fiction" or "reservoir dogs" type of movie look elsewhere. |
