The names Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone are synonymous with great westerns, so it's a rare treat for Seoulites to have a chance to watch some of the classics directed by one of the greats on a big screen.
If you ask any western movie fan, I mean real western fans, the movies that will appear on the list are "The Man With No Name" trilogy (which consists of "A Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly") and "Once Upon a Time in the West". All films by Leone and all presented at the film festival.
"The retrospective will offer a rare and precious opportunity for those who love cinema and Italian culture to watch on the big screen Sergio Leone's masterpieces and listen to Ennio Morricone soundtracks", said Lucio Izzo, the director of the Italian Cultural Institute.
The film festival will run until July 27 at the Seoul Art Cinema next to Insa-dong.
Italian critic and Leone expert, Robert Donativ, will introduce "A Fistful of Dynamite" on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Donati will also hold a lecture about Leone on Saturday at 4 p.m.
There will also be a roundtable discussion about Leone's movies with Donati, local film director Oh Seung-ook, film critic Kim Yong-jin, and film critic and Seoul Art Cinema programmer Kim Sung-uk on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Izzo explained that this is a unique experience because watching these movies on the big screen gives the full spectrum of the director's vision.
But don't call these spaghetti westerns, these are Italian westerns said Italian Ambassador Massimo Leggeri during a recent interview with The Korea Herald.
While Leone is probably more known for westerns, he has also directed the immortal classic "Once Upon a Time in America" which was nominated for two Golden Globes and won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award in 1984.
All films will be screened in English with Korean subtitles. For a full schedule visit Open the link
One interesting piece of trivia, on the set of "A Fistful of Dollars", Clint Eastwood nicknamed Leone, "Yosemite Sam", because of his often belligerent temper.
