The Korean contemporary art scene in 624 pages

Becoming familiar with the Korean contemporary art scene just got easier.

Arts Council Korea and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism have published an English-language directory of 100 up-and-coming Korean artists titled "100.art.kr: The Korean Contemporary Art Scene".

The project began in late 2010 in response to mounting pressure from the art community discouraged by the scarcity of English-language materials analyzing the Korean contemporary art scene despite its growing influence abroad.

The 624-page compilation with large illustrations introduces readers to Yeesookyung, Yong-Baek Lee, Yeondoo Jung and Kyungwoo Chun, among others. Most of the artists featured were born in the 1960s and 1970s.

Officials at Arts Council Korea said they are working to publish the book overseas, although that process will likely take a few months.
