The Morning After: Men Look Back, Women Move On

Contrary to popular belief, it is men who are more likely to glance back with a sigh after a one-night stand, not the women, a survey suggests.

The imminent opening of the movie "Woman on the Beach" has prompted an ongoing poll on the question, "After a one-night stand, do you coolly break up the next day?" Some 53.6 percent of women respondents said yes. Among men, the proportion was only 44.5 percent. Of the 3,500 women who took the survey, 1,877 had a sliver of ice in their hearts.

Among men, there was a tendency to say, "We've got a connection here, let's keep in touch" with 26.2 percent. But only 9.4 percent of women used that line.

Men who say, "I'll call you once I've done some thinking" made up 20.9 percent. Combined with other replies, the survey shows that a majority of men are unwilling to let go just yet the morning after.

This study was conducted by the Hyundai Research Institute along with the movie's production company and Daum portal site. It covered 7,000 people, 1,750 of them in their 20s and 30s.

Asked how they feel about their partner's previous sexual history, the majority or 56.6 percent agreed with the statement, "Because we love each other now, it doesn't matter, but I still don't want to know".

Added together with the 18 percent that said "If I did know, it would probably have a negative impact on our relationship", a decisive majority of 74.6 percent had no desire to dig too deep into their partner's past.

That suggests a certain amount of hypocrisy still surrounds one-night stands, where people may be open to the idea of having one themselves if they can persuade themselves that that their own one-nighters are a brief love affair but see their partner's as immoral acts.
