This year's festival, which runs through May 6, features the largest screening program so far, with 229 films from 58 countries. A day after tickets went on sale on April 13, 80 films had already sold out -- twice as many as last year.

"On Body and Soul" by Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi opened the festival, an annual event in North Jeolla Province.

Music performances will also be staged by local and foreign bands, including Slovenia's Laibach, the first European rock band to play in Pyongyang. To mark Children's Day on Friday, animated films will be screened for families with kids.

"Survival Family" by Japanese director Shinobu Yaguchi, who is best known for "Waterboys" in 2001 and 2004's "Swing Girls", will wrap up the festival.
