Korean-American director Kim So-yong's sophomore feature "Treeless Mountain" captured a Special Jury prize at the 9th Tokyo Filmex, held Nov 22 – 30. It shared the prize along with Chinese director Yu Guang-yi's documentary, . Both films will receive US $4000 each in color negative film supplied by award sponsor Kodak.
KIM's Treeless Mountain was selected in the 2005 Pusan Promotion Plan, and had its world premiere at the 2008 Toronto Int'l Film Festival. It screened in the Korean Cinema Today section at this year's Pusan Int'l Film Festival.
It is KIM's first film to be shot entirely in Korea with a Korean cast, and tells the story of two young sisters shuffled about from their mother to an alcoholic aunt, and on to their grandmother. The film received location and production support from the Seoul Film Commission. KIM's feature debut was the Sundance-screened .
The Filmex fest this year invited director Song Il-gon to sit on the jury along with Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-Fai and others. SONG has directed several film festival favorites and was the first Korean to win a Cannes prize. The top prize went to by Israeli helmer Ari Folman.
