Filmmaker Hong Sang Soo, director of The Day A Pig Fell Into The Well and The Power Of Kangwon Province, follows up those two highly acclaimed films with the provocatively titled, Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors. Shot in beautiful black and white, the film centers on Soo Jung (Lee Eun Joo), a twenty-four-year-old cable television writer and assistant at a small video company. As the story develops, Soo Jung finds herself being pursued by both her boss, Young Soo (Moon Sung Keun, from Princess Aurora), and his friend/ benefactor, the wealthy socialite Jae Hoon (Jung Bo Seok, from Don't Tell Papa and Everybody Has Secrets).

As Jae Hoon begins to pursue a relationship with Soo Jung, the two begin to have decidedly different perspectives on how their relationship is developing, as each character is given a chance to narrate events from their own point of view. What really happened between them? As Soo Jung's and Jae Hoon's memories begin to conflict, viewers will begin to wonder where the truth lies. Perhaps answers will be given in the film's final segment, in which both Soo Jong and Jae Hoon narrate together! "Virgin Stripped Bare by her Bachelors" is a very peculiar viewing experience. The film is shot in black and white, but this is not the glorious black and white of films from the 1940s and 1950s, with the mastery of shades of grey typical of that era. Instead, here the film stock is deliberately overexposed to create a stark world of washed-out white and detail-obscuring black. Moreover, director Hong Sang Soo shunned the use of close-ups, shooting nearly the entire film in the middle distance. The effect of these techniques is to distance the viewer from the film's action by shutting the viewer out of the characters' interior lives.

This distance is furthered by the fractured way in which the film's story is presented. Scenes are presented out of order, then scenes are repeated with slight variations, as the story is told first from the perspective of the male lead, then retold from the perspective of the female lead.

In short, the story is as follows: Soo Jung (the late Lee Eun Joo) works as an assistant to an artist named Young Soo (Moon Sung Keun), who is struggling to make some kind of a movie. (The viewer never is given a glimpse of the movie being made.) There appears to be some kind of romantic involvement between Soo Jung and Young Soo. Jae Hoon (Jung Bo Seok) is Young Soo's friend and the financier of the movie he is making. Jae Hoon quickly becomes attracted to Soo Jung and, on an occasion when Young Soo becomes very drunk, Jae Hoon takes advantage of the opportunity to make his feelings known. We then see the pursuit of the relationship between Jae Hoon and Soo Jung, mostly through a series of Jae Hoon's ham-handed attempts to grope the young woman.

While viewing the film was an intriguing experience, the interest generated by the film is not so much due to the relationship between the characters as it is due to the puzzle-like story. One keeps watching primarily to figure out what the heck is going on. Indeed, at the film's end, the viewer is left feeling that these characters, who profess such strong feelings for each other, still barely know each other.

It is a testimony to the exquisite acting skills of Lee Eun Joo that we come to care very much about her character in this oblique tale. Those who seek a conventional love story will find "Virgin Stripped Bare" to be a frustrating experience. Those who seek more off-beat, elliptical fare may find this film engrossing.
