Waterside Leisure Experience Tour in Korea

Everything is green and fresh on this bright April day in Buyeo, Chungcheong Province, some one hundred and fifty kilometers south of Seoul.
The city used to be the capital of the ancient Baekje Kingdom from around 14-centuries ago.
But today, about one hundred and eighty people, including ambassadors and foreign nationals residing in Korea, are enjoying riding bicycles.
The Korea Tourism Organization, together with the culture ministry, has arranged this trip, dubbed the "Waterside Leisure Experience Tour", to promote domestic tourism near the nation's riversides.

[Interview : Krysztof Majka, Ambassador Embassy of Poland] "I mean, to get out of Seoul, actually, and from the office, and to enjoy the beauty of the nature. You know the road which we have covered today, it was certainly beautiful, and the road conditions were fantastic".

After riding bicycles, tourists take strolls at nearby historic sites from the ancient Baikje kingdom.

[Reporter : Park Ji-won jiwonpark@arirang.co.kr] "This is the Sajaru pavilion built during the reign of the ancient Baikje kingdom, which ruled the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula for over six hundred years until the seventh century".

This former fortress, which used to protect the royal palace of the Baikje dynasty, now offers a place to enjoy beautiful scenery over the nearby river.

The tour itinerary also includes a ferry ride along the Baekma river, a branch of the Keum river, one of the four major rivers running in Korea.

[Interview : Lee Charm, CEO Korea Tourism Organization] "We just had this four river restoration project, where, you know, the original beauty of the river is coming back again,.. and the rivers become a stage for aquatic tourism, basically you can go boating, you can go paddling with a kayak or a canoe, and so on".

So for those of you who want a getaway from the monotony of daily life, consider a simple, but refreshing trip to this ancient city by the river.
