YesAsia Editorial Description
Hong Sang Soo's explicit tapestry of human emotions and behaviour is at its best again in this tale about two long-time friends who have had an affair with the same woman. Hon Jun (Kim Tae Woo) makes his own movies, while Mun Ho (Yoo Ji Tae) has picked up an educational job as arts teacher. By chance the two friends meet again talking about old times and come across the topic of their shared past love Son Hwa (Sung Hyun Ah). As a result, they decide to meet Son Hwa together one more time
Portraying real-as-life characters with very natural human traits in a movie void of any commercial Hollywood action and glamour, Hong Sang Soo's latest work turns into another success for contemporary Korean avant-garde cinema. Top actor Joo Ji Tae received double nominations at the Cannes Film Festival for Woman is The Future of Man and Old Boy. For Woman is The Future of Man, he shunned no efforts to gain over 20 pounds to fit into his assigned role.

Kooky Character Study
|
This is one of a few Hong Sang-soo films I have got around to seeing of late and probably isn't the ideal film to begin with, due to a more seeming ambivalent script than to Hong's other movies. It can be somewhat confusing with scenes that are fractured and disjointed (reflecting the three characters here) and it does have a sudden abrupt end that indicates no finalization seems possible with the nature of their lives - none of the 3 characters seem to know where their goal posts are. The story is taking place in a 30 hour time frame, although told at various points and angles and hinged by intricate character dialogue concerning mainly sexual ambivalence with the 3 main protagonists. In fact this film's script seems so precise that you feel the need to take in all facets of the conversations to understand them, yet - ironically - all 3 people seem so out of kilter that precision and order is the last thing you would expect with them. Yu-Ji Tae's character as a university art lecturer has a bad memory, for instance. The film is certainly built around the themes of irony (and very humorous at times) and certainly a study of student type relationships. Contradictions are a plenty in this! The two male leads also behave as if they are still routed in their student days themselves. I liked the bit about a waitress in a Chinese restaurant at the beginning getting asked by Kim Tae-woo, whose character studied film making in the U.S., to be an actress and later (symmetrical style) Yu Ji-tae asking her to be a nude artist's model, which I found reflected the actual talents of Sung Hyan Ah who plays Seonha in this film - who is an actress and a model in real life). Still, I'm no intellectual or Hong expert. But, if you are familiar with Hong films this could be worth a visit (and plenty of re-visits afterwards to get more out of it!) but if not, try another of his movies like "Turning Gate" or "Virgin Stripped Bear ..." first. One last thing, this DVD is an ALL region and not just a 3 as advertised according to my copy. |

| While I enjoy alternative narration styles (i.e., lazy story lines, time shifts, etc.), they must be done in such a way that you do not lose the audience or the story line. I enjoyed the slow pace, and followed the time shifts in this wonderfully acted movie; however, I was left unfulfilled once all was over. This movie does not seem to have a Beginning or an End. Only a Middle... We were abruptly thrown into the story of two reunited friends while they reminisce about a young woman both had some relationship with. They find her, and do some more reminiscing and talking through a very somber tone of loneliness. Some more things lazily happen, and the BOOM... credits roll. None of the issues/problems/feelings raised were resolved. We were left wondering what the point was (although through the film, we had our own ideas of what was wrong/right with the situation). It is a decent viewing if you just need another K-movie to pop in the region-free player, but I would stay away if you are not an addict like myself. (Also, seems to feel somewhat like "lost in translation", only with much less resolution or meaning.) |

| Actor Yoo Ji Tae was really lucky this year. Two of his films were nominated at Festival De Cannes 2004 including this film. Director Hong Sang Su did an excellent job on telling the stories of these characters. Acting was excellent, hard to judge which actor was best in here, they were all great. This limited edition comes with a soundtrack (released for the first time) is absolutely amazing. It's very different from other Korean movie soundtracks. It's very thoughtfully composed, which gives it's film a very unique feeling. This was my first time seeing Hong Sang Su's movie. Now I am going to buy all of his movies. |
