World's Top Break Dance Teams to Converge on Seoul for R-16 Competition

The 2007 break dance documentary Planet B-Boy, which chronicled Korean crew Last For One's win at the 2005 Battle of the Year competition in Germany, has boosted worldwide interest in Korea's dance crews. Since 2007, the R-16 championship has been held in Seoul and has become one of the most prestigious "b-boy" competitions in the world.

More than 200 competitors from 16 countries will participate in individual and team competitions at R16, including from the United States, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, all hoping to clinch the top prize.

Competitors will be judged based on their dance fundamentals, originality, dynamics, and the execution of their routines in each battle with another crew.

This year, Korean-American hip hop superstar Tiger JK will be the ambassador and emcee for the competition. There will also be special performances by Korean-American pop star Jay Park (Park Jae-bum) and his b-boy crew from Seattle, Art of Movement, as well as performances by entertainers Drunken Tiger, SunZoo, RedBull Allstars, and the Oneum Chamber Orchestra.

R16 will also boast a VIP panel of judges from the United States, Korea, France, Finland, Poland, and Mexico.

R-16 is sponsored by the Korea Tourism Organization, and aims to help promote Korea globally. The championship will take place on July 2 and July 3 at Seoul Olympic Hall.
