"Yellow Sea" takes top spot on weekend box office chart

Korean film "The Yellow Sea" emerged on top of Korea's box office during the weekend of December 24 to 26, according to data by the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.

"The Yellow Sea", directed by Na Hong-jin and starring Ha Jung-woo, Kim Yun-seok and Cho Seong-ha, attracted 815,177 viewers during the past three days after opening in theaters on December 22.

"The Yellow Sea" tells the story of a cash-desperate Korean-Chinese who goes to Korea to commit a murder to make money but finds the murder has already been carried out yet is accused of the crime.

Arriving at No. 2 was Korean comedy "Hello Ghost" starring actors Cha Tae-hyun and Kang Ye-won which sold a total of 738,696 tickets.

The movie, which opened in local theaters last week, is about a guy who starts seeing four ghosts - a pervert, a chain smoker, a crying woman and a child -- who will not leave his side until he grants them their wish.

Fantasy film "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1" helmed by David Yates and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson brought in 716,042 viewers during the same period to attract over two million moviegoers since opening in local theaters on December 16.

The film based on J.K. Rowling's seventh and final book in the "Harry Potter" series marks the beginning to the end of the boy wizard's odyssey, highlighting on his confrontation with the dark Lord Voldemort.

Other movies in the top 10 were "Sammy's Adventures: The Secret Passage", "Petty Romance", "The Chronicles of Narnia : The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", "The Next Three Days", "Finding Mr. Destiny" and "The Tourist".
