YesAsia Editorial Description

A phenomenal wave of fusion " sageuk" (or periodic drama) continues to raid the small screens in Korea. While Jumong, Four Gods, Dae Jo Young and Yeon Gae Somun all channeled their focus on the earlier part of Korean history, the latest influx of sageuk sees a trend of returning to the Joseon era. In particular, two historical dramas, namely KBS's Hansungbulgok and cable channel CGV's Eight Days, recently offered their take on the reigning era of King Jeong Jo (1776-1800), the 22nd monarch of Joseon Dynasty. MBC now joins the bandwagon, offering their unique take on the legacy of a popular king remembered as one of the greatest leaders in Korean history.

Adopting King Jeong Jo's pre-imperial name of Yi San, director Lee Byung Hoon (Dae Jang Geum, Hur Jun) presents Lee San, Wind of the Palace (a.k.a. Yi San). This fusion drama chronicles the life of King Jeong Jo, who fought for commoners' rights and bureaucratic reformation. Far exceeding the ratings of its competitors like The King And I and Kwon Sang Woo's Bad Love, Lee San, Wind of the Palace recently spiced up its plot by introducing a Da Vinci Code-style mystery in which the young King Jeong Jo tries to decipher the codes in a painting.

Lee Seo Jin (Lovers, Damo) dives into the role of King Jeong Jo with majestic flair alongside veteran actor Lee Soon Jae (Sangdo, Hur Jun) who plays the hot-tempered King Yeong Jo, Jeong Jo's grandfather. Han Ji Min (Capital Scandal) plays Seong Song Yeon, a palace maid who captivates King Jeong Jo's heart, and later becomes his concubine. Interestingly, almost half of the main cast are from director Lee's 2003 mega hit Dae Jang Geum including Park Eun Hye, Gyeun Mi Ri, Lee Jong Soo, raising the bar of expectations for viewers and critics alike.

Lee Byoung-hoon, the director of the hit TV series The Jewel in the Palace, will direct this new period drama.
In the late 18th century, Lee San became the 22nd kind of the Joseon Dynasty!
It was the most tumultuous times ever seen in the 500-year-old Joseon monarchy!
He was an open-minded, wise king who championed democratic values.
The stories of his glorious triumphs, ordeals, regrets, and historical achievements are shown in this TV drama.

A story about Lee San’s life

The politics of Lee San (King Jung-jo)
He was a natural leader who ended vicious partisan politics and revived the economy with his extensive knowledge of the market. He created a strong paradigm in the 18th century and ruled with the kingdom wisely!
This biopic drama covers his dramatic life and shows the achievements of the Silhak scholars and outstanding officials who rebuilt the kingdom’s power.

The high point of the arts in the late Joseon Dynasty.
Hwaseong Fortress was a remarkable architectural achievement during this period and western knowledge began to seep into the kingdom. Brilliant individuals such as Park Ji-won, Lee Ick, Jung Yak-yong, Kim Hong-do, Shin Yoon-bok, and others are introduced in this TV drama as well.
For the first time, the art workshop of the palace will be shown along with the Aekjung office and Seja Ikwiesa. There were 10 failed assassination attempts made during this period alone in the 500-year history of the Joseon Kingdom and they will be depicted as well.

Economic turning point in the 18th century
As family industries began to be replaced with a trading economy, the 18th century was a turning point for the economy-!
The commercial trade of the times will be depicted realistically and the trading organization that Song-yeon leads is where the latter Joseon Dynasty’s economy originated from. The special Joseon Dynasty products that were made under the guidance of Song-yeon were exported to the China’s Ching Dynasty.
In addition, the 30-year romance between the leading female character Song-yeon (Eubin Sung) and King Jung-jo will also be a main theme in the drama.

The reinforcement of the army and military research
In the late 18th century, western technology began to seep into the kingdom and many political factions that opposed the king tried to fan the flames by starting anti-government movements. This led King Jung-jo to take a strong interest in national security and a military buildup. This is when the king reformed the army and began to beef up military research. One accomplishment in this era was the publication of the Muyedobotongji, Joseon dynasty’s first martial arts textbook to ever exist.

Excellent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have just finished watching the whole series yesterday and believed this has to be one of the best dramas. All characters were well performed by everyone. The picture quality is also excellent. However, soundtrack is not up to par as it was being presented in Mono only not the original stereo. I hope the future releases would be better because it is quite expensive for the whole set and if future releases could be in Bluray format that would be even better.

Favorite Character Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I would've liked to see the writer be more generous with the life of one of my favorite character(Soon Yeon). I realize that this story is historical, but a writer can emblish on history with his pen and imagination. She died such a horrible painful death. The writer did not clarify for me if the young Crown Prince.....King was the son
she sacrified her life for or if the child died with her. Vol 4, although good, has left me bewildered how it ended .

This customer review refers to Yi San (DVD) (Vol. 1) (Limited Edition) (MBC TV Drama) (Korea Version)
well done Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This drama starts off extremely slow pace. I almost gave up because it was so depressing seeing yi San's enemies forever having the upper hand. However if you can patiently sit through the first one third of the series I promise you will be rewarded with the rest of the very interesting drama right through to the very end. It was when Hung KR came into the picture when the game slowly turned round in Yi San's favour. Without Hung, Yi san would have died a couple of times over let alone got to the throne. Hung's character is one of the best ever written. His loyalty always lies with his emperor although he did keep you guessing all the time(and you never completely trust him). Despite of his many blunders the emperor found heart to forgive him every time. Sadly he spent his last days in exile thinking he would never be able to see his emperor again. This desperation eventually led to his prematured death. Song Yeon's life is in a way quite tragic. Having forced to be separated from her baby brother after she lost her parents, she was not well treated by her 'colleagues' in the beginning. The emperor's mother also rejected her. She lost her young son and finally died of an incurable disease. Yi San (King Jeong Jo) on the other hand had a hard life also. Having lost his father through power struggle he was continuously doubted by his grandfather. He survived a few assassination attempts, had to fight hard to marry the only girl he loved, only to lose her as well as his beloved young son to illnesses. There are two outstanding saintly characters in the story. The first being Dai Shao's uncle who tenderly brought up his nephew and friend of nephew - Song Yeon and cared for the two of them more than a father would. The other one is the empress-Yi San's wife. Knowing her husband did not love her (though he greatly respected her) she made sure that he could marry the girl he so loved. She was kind and loving towards Song Yeon, sharing her happiness and misfortunes. Near the end I still feel sad that Hung KR was no longer there to see the emperor's many achievements. The last epistle is sad but very touching with all the memories flushing back. After all this is a very long series.

Vol 1 & Vol 2 Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I was quite pleased with the excellent English subtitle in Vols. 1 & 2, and I believe it will continue throughout the entire drama. Thank you.

The relentless plot is quite scary at times for me the viewer against the Crown Prince and wishes more expressed romance instead of an implied one between the Crown Prince and the Maiden. Let's hope Vol 3 will be the turning point for me.

Moving and dramatic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This drama is exactly that.................dramatic. It really tells you the story about power and greed.
Although my ultimate drama is still Jewel in the Palace, this comes in second. I think the child actors make the movie and really inspire the story's beginning. You really need to see it from the beginning to know
how and why the things that happen, happened. However, I do agree with some reviewers that at
times it became frustrating when the characters passiveness or ignorance dragged on too long.
Although, they did seem to recover when the twists of the story turns things around. I love the character
of Daigu though as he seem to become more and more intelligent as time passed. All in all I loved this
drama and will get all volumes to share with my sisters who are also drama addicts.
