The local film "Oseam" was given the top prize in the feature films competition section at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France on Saturday.

The animation, directed by Sung Baek-yeop received the Cristal D'Annecy, the prize for best feature at the festival, which is considered the most important event for animations in the world.

It is the second time for a local film to receive the top prize at Annecy. "Mari Iyagi (My Beautiful Girl, Mari)" also received the best feature prize at the event in 2002.

Other films in the feature competition section of the festival included "Hair High" by Bill Plympton of the United States, "P3K Pinocchio 3000" by Daniel Robichaud of Canada and "El Cid, La Leyenda" by Jose Pozo of Spain.

Made with a budget of 15 billion won, "Oseam" tells the story of a young boy and his blind sister who are searching for their mother and find themselves taken in by a group of kind Buddhist monks in the mountains.

The film was released in local theaters in April 2003, and although it received many positive reviews, the film suffered from a lack of theaters willing to screen it and was only seen by 100,000 viewers. Another 200,000 viewers saw it when it was re-released a few months later.

"Oseam's" award was the icing on the cake for Korean animations, which were spotlighted throughout the six-day event. Including "Oseam", 10 local animations were presented in various sections in the event, including Shin Toe-sik's "The Boxer" in the TV series section and two films _ Hong Sung-ho's "Egg-Cola: A Miracle in the Desert" and Kim Jun-ki's "Insaeng (Life)" _ in the short film section.

The festival also held a special retrospective of 30 South Korean animations titled "2004: Spotlighting Korea", which included the screening of "Wonderful Days" and "By Beautiful Girl, Mari".
