`Windstruck' Hits It Big in Japan

SEOUL (Yonhap) - The Romantic Comedy "Windstruck" established a new box office record in Japan for South Korean films, its producer said Monday.
"Windstruck" raked in 1.82 billion yen ($17.5 million) at the Japanese box office as of Sunday, becoming the top-grossing South Korean film in Japan, the film studio, I Film Corp., said.

The previous record was 1.8 billion yen for "Shiri", directed by Kang Je-gyu, who is also known for the film "Tae Guk Gi".

Starring Jun Ji-hyun and directed by Kwak Jae-young, "Windstruck" opened on 310 screens in Japan on Dec. 11 and sold more than 1.37 million tickets as of the sixth week following its opening.

"Taegukgi" ranked third on the list of top-grossing Korean films screened in Japan with 12 billion yen and 900,000 viewers, followed by "JSA - Joint Security Area ", which took in 1.15 billion yen and drew in 825,000 movie-goers.

"Windstruck", which pairs a spunky policewoman with a sweet teacher, sold 2.3 million tickets since its opening in South Korea in June.
