Director Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (Chinjolhan Kumjassi)" attracted around 250,000 moviegoers in one day, setting a record among films that have been released this year.

The film was released yesterday in approximately 370 movie theaters across the nation amid enormous attention from the public and the press as it stars top actress Lee Young-ae and is the conclusion of Park's trilogy on the theme of revenge, following "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance", and "Old Boy".

It is a story of a woman who tries to take revenge on a man who puts her in a prison for 13 years.

The film has also been invited to compete at this year's Venice Film Festival, according to the Korea Film Council on Thursday.

This is the third time for Park to be invited to one of the world's three major festivals, following " JSA - Joint Security Area" to Berlin Film Festival in 2001 and "Old Boy" to Cannes Film Festival last year. Thus, following director Im Kwon-taek, Park has become the second Korea director to have been invited to all of the three film festivals.

Director Hong Joon-won's "Happy Birthday" has also been invited to compete in the short film section of the Venice Film Festival.

Since director Jang Sun-woo's Lies' in 1999, Korean films have been advancing into the Venice film festival for seven years in a row.
