2PM Ok Taecyeon gives up US 'green card' to serve in active-service

Popular idol group 2PM's Ok Taecyeon has given up his permanent U.S. residency and is currently getting ready for a re-examination to serve in active-service military, Cookie news reported.
On Dec. 1, he visited the U.S Embassy in Seoul to give up his "green card", His decision was based on North Korea's artillery strike on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island in the West Sea on Nov. 23, the report said.
Seeing what had happened, he felt a strong conviction to "protect the country" and after consulting his family and management agency his decision was settled.
"After his debut in 2008, Ok Taecyeon took a physical examination but was unhappy that he was ineligible for civil service. He wanted to serve in active service", said a JYP spokesperson. "He wants a second examination. It's very rare for an idol singer to think in this way. We're proud of his mature decision".
Ok Taecyeon returned to Korea Friday night after completing the 2PM debut showcase in Japan. He is busy shooting a new KBS 2TV series "Dream High" set to air in January.

택연은 지난 1일 주한미국대사관을 직접 찾아가 미국 영주권 포기서를 작성하고 이를 제출했다는 것. 택연이 미국 영주권을 포기하고 현역으로 군 입대를 결정하게 된 계기는 지난달 23일 북한이 연평도 육상에 해안포를 발사한 사건 때문이라고. 이로 인해 택연은 "나라를 수호하겠다"는 신념이 강하게 생겼고, 가족 및 소속사 식구와 상의한 끝에 "미국 영주권을 포기하고 현역으로 입대하겠다"는 뜻을 밝혔다고 소속사 JYP 관계자가 밝혔다.
이 관계자는 "재검을 받고 가급적이면 현역을 가고 싶어 한다. 아이돌인데다 어린 나이에 이런 결정을 내려줬다는 게 대견하고 기특하다"고 덧붙였다.
현재 택연은 일본에서 2PM 데뷔 쇼케이스를 마치고 9일 밤 귀국했으며, 내년 1월 첫 방송되는 KBS 2TV 월화드라마 '드림하이' 촬영으로 인해 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있다.
