Kang Soo-yeon's Second Death Anniversary

Two years have passed since Kang Soo-yeon, the first world star actress in the Korean film industry, passed away. Still, many people are showing their longing by remembering the footsteps left by the late Kang Soo-yeon.

The late Kang Soo-yeon was found in cardiac arrest at her home in Apgujeong-dong, Seoul, on the afternoon of May 5, 2022, and was taken to a hospital. She passed away on the afternoon of the 7th after failing to regain consciousness when surgery was not easy due to a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 55.

The movie industry was saddened by the sudden sad news of the late Kang Soo-yeon, who announced her return to the screen by appearing in Yeon Sang-ho's film "Jung E" after a 10-year hiatus at the time.

The late Kang Soo-yeon began as a child actress and emerged as a youth star by appearing in "Whale Hunt 2" (1985) and "Mimi and Cheol-soo's Youth Sketch" (1987).

The deceased, who became the first world star in Korean cinema in 1986 by receiving the best actress award at the Venice International Film Festival and the Nantes Three Continents Film Festival for director Lim Kwon-taek's "The Surrogate Woman" in 1986, also won the Best Actress Award at the Moscow International Film Festival for "Aze Aze Aze Baraje" (1989), which showed her acting spirit with a shaved head, promoting Korean films to the world.

Since then, the deceased, who has released a number of works in the 1990s, including "Falling Has Wings" (1989), "The Road to the Riding Ground" (1991), "Blue In You" (1992), "Go Alone Like the Horn of a Musso" (1995), and "Dinner of the Wives" (1998), has been loved by viewers with the TV drama "Gynarchy" in 2001.

In addition, she has been an executive member of BIFF since 1998 and was elected as co-executive chairwoman in 2015 and took the lead in the development of Korean films.

Last year, in the first anniversary of the late Kang Soo-yeon, a memorial exhibition "Kang Soo-yeon, Filmically Long" was held. Hosted by the 29-member Kang Soo-yeon Memorial Project Promotion Committee, including director Im Kwon-taek, former chairman Kim Dong-ho, actors Park Joong-hoon and Ye Ji-won, the memorial exhibition screened 11 films of the deceased to newly enhance actress Kang Soo-yeon's achievements and status in the year 2023.

Along with the memorial exhibition, a memorial book "Kang Soo-yeon" was also published, which contains writings by critic Jung Sung-il and novelist Chung Se-rang, handwritten letters by director Bong Joon-ho, Sol Kyung-gu and actors Kim Hyun-joo, and dozens of pictures of the deceased's film journey.

Again this year, filmmakers plan to honor the deceased in various ways.
