A base camp for 'Hallyu' to be opened in Shinjuku, Tokyo

The Korea Center Tokyo to be opened on 18th… Minister Yu and other representatives are scheduled to participate in the opening ceremony.

Korea PR Center, a base camp for Hallyu, the Korean Wave, is set to be established in the middle of busy street of Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. Korea Center Tokyo's opening ceremony is scheduled to be held with participation of 300 representatives from political, cultural, and art circles in Korea and Japan on 18th, 4 p.m., according to the announcement made by the Korean Cultural Center in Japan on 15th.
The construction of Korea Center Tokyo was started in June, 2007 and completed in April. For construction, the Korean Cultural Center in Japan bought vacant land owned by the government of Japan. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea has promoted Korean cultural contents in all areas including cultureㆍtourismㆍcultural industryㆍsports in an integrated way since 2006. For this, the ministry has unified overseas cultural centers with overseas offices of the Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea Creative Content Agency as well as other organizations related to the ministry of culture to establish Korea centers. Currently, 12 cultural centers in 9 countries are operated. The Korea Cultural Center, Los Angeles which was open in 2006 was the first organization to be established to this end. And two more cultural centers were opened in Beijing and Shanghai in 2007.
The establishment of Korea Center Tokyo is meaningful given that it is the first center to be newly built in foreign countries, which is contrary to other Korea centers whose buildings were purchased for remodeling. Designed by Samoo Architects and Engineers and constructed by Samsung C&T Corporation, the center in Tokyo has 8 stories above ground and one below. As a modern building, it has 370 seat- multipurpose performance stage, 'Hanmadang Hall', which is necessary for promotion of culture, and gallery 'Mi' as well as library.
Above all, Korea Center Tokyo embodies the harmony of the beauty of Seung Moo, Buddhist Dance, and that of Korean traditional architect, using contemporary techniques. On 4th floor are sarangbang of Hanok (Korean traditional house), Daechung Maroo, and traditional garden, all of which were modeled after Yeongyeongdang of Changdeokgung Palace Complex, allowing citizens of Tokyo to enjoy the beauty of Korea at the heart of Japan.

The opening ceremony is participated by about 300 officials from political, cultural, and art circles of Korea and Japan, including Minister Yu In-chon of Culture, Sports and Tourism, representatives of the Korean National Assembly led by Jeon Byung-heon of the Committee on Culture, Sports, Tourism, Broadcasting & Communications, Tamotsu Aoki, the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Yoshiaki Honpo, Commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency. In the meantime, the ministry of culture purchased vacant land to build the Korea Center, New York by 2012
