Arirang Television President Resigns

Samuel Koo Wednesday resigned as president of Arirang, the English-language television and radio network.

Koo cited bad health as the reason for his decision. However, local media reports said complaints of management inefficiency by the network’s labor union and accusations of sexual harassment by a female employee of Arirang played an important role in his decision. A committee yesterday began investigating the sexual harassment charges.

Koo was appointed president of the network in December 2003 by the former culture minister Lee Chang-dong, despite opposition from employees in the company, which was about to introduce a system for selecting its president from applied candidates.

Koo launched projects to air Arirang programs in east European, middle east Asian countries as well as South America.
