Art and Culture

2012/04/19 Source

It's Thursday and I'm sure everyone is ALREADY waiting for the weekend to come, to get some sleep, rest, and also go out and check out the art and culture scene. Our Michelle Kim brings us the latest updates on the art and culture news.
Hello Michelle

[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So what do you have for us today ?

[Reporter : ] To start us off I have three independent films that portray the lives of three different people. These three films offer a message about life to the viewers as well. Take a look.

Documentaries featuring real life figures are making a hit in theaters as soon as they are released.

The film, 'Planet of Snail' tells a story about the love and interactions between a deaf-blind husband and his wife with a spinal disability.

[Interview : Jeon Hye-Kyung, viewer] "The movies that come out these days are mostly very violent, so this subtle love story is particulary enjoyable and I spent some amusing timethinking about the movie".

The "Talking Architect" portrays the last year before his death of architect Chung Gi-Yong and his consideration for the environment and people with his work.

All of these Independent movies both reached the 10,000 viewer mark and have also reached the top ten in the number of viewers watched per day.

Along with these two movies, another documentary is taking the theaters by storm as well. The film, "Mother - 2011" is about the life of Lee So-Seon, who is the mother of Jeon Tae-il, a young worker who fought and sacrificed his life to improve labor conditions in Korea in the 1970s.

This film has been gaining popularity through words of mouth, resulting in many of the viewers re-visiting the theaters to watch it again and also prompting group viewings.

[Interview : Kim Hwa-beom, Director] "The livers of the main character in each of the films are the messages of life and the audience relates them easily to their lives because they are able to share the good and bad of life".

Unlike films dealing with fictional characters, these movies portraying the lives and views of real-life figures convey a stronger message of the meaning of life.

You know, this is a really nice break from all of the blockbuster movies coming out in theaters. Sometimes you just need a bit of subtlety in your lives and watching movies about everyday heroes definitely helps.

[Reporter : ] Definitely. I like to believe that every movie has a moral to it, but sometimes it is just difficult to catch. But films like this, I feel like every scene and every dialogue is filled with wisdom.

I agree, I'm sure these movies will be touching and sometimes sad but will convey a strong statement to the viewers. And moving on, what else do you have for us

[Reporter : ] I have two exhibitions for you now, one that mixes fortune-telling tarot cards and greek mythology, and one about the seven dwarves. Here are the details on this one.

A magician from the fortune-telling Tarot Cards is portrayed as a Greek God, and the cute dwarves from Snow White have scars on their faces and bodies. What is going on

[Interview : Park Min Joon, Artist] "I wondered what would come out if I expressed the individual's life by using the meanings of each Tarot Card... "

The sculptures show the dwarves signature puffy cheeks, big eyes, and round noses. Sleepy, Grumpy, and Dopey from the story "Snow White" are molded in silicon and painted with bright, vivid colors. However, if you take a closer look, a part of their bodies have been vandalized.
This exhibition shows that characters from fairy tales do not always have to be charming and lovely.
This simple yet different perspective creates a provocative imagination and artwork that is sure to grab the viewer's attention.

[Reporter : ] The exhibition The Stranger will be held until the 22nd of April at the Gallery Hyundai and the Paul McCarthy Nine Dwarves exhibition will be held until May 12th at the Kukje Gallery.

You know Tarot Cards are a big hit in Korea these days, and to have that as an exhibition theme mixed with Greek Mythology I think this will be a crowd pleaser instantly.

[Reporter : ] Definitely! And to also see the sculptures of the dwarves from Snow White...I mean, it IS just a tad bit upsetting that they are vandalized in a way but I think the artist's purpose is easily understandable. I'm still just excited to see the dwarves from one of my favorite childhood fairytales.

I will also be looking forward to seeing this exhibition as well. And now, you have the events bulletin for us[Reporter : ] Yes I do. I have three concerts just for you.

[Reporter : ed:mark] This bulletin features 3 events

The star group of 2011 Jisan Valley Rock Festival, 'One Ok Rock' will be coming back to Korea on June 16th for a concert at Ax-Korea. The band consists of four members, vocalist Taka, guitarist, Toru, bassist Ryota, and drummer Tomoya.

R&B singer Musiq Soulchild will hold his first live concert in Korea on May 11th at Ax-Korea. His hit songs consist of, "For the Night", "Half Crazy", "Who Knows", and "If U Leave".

Crossover Tenor Lim Tae Kyung will be having a concert on the 26th and 27th of May at the Olympic Park SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium. He has gained popularity after his performance at the T.V. hit show "Legend Song2"
