Art and Culture

It's Monday and it's the start of a new week once again and we are back with all the latest art and culture updates from our Michelle Kim. I hear she has an idea on what we may be able to do during memorial day, as well as information on the latest musicals and plays.
Hello Michelle

[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So, what do you have for us today[Reporter : ] Memorial Day is coming up and there has been more visitors at the Daejeon National Cemetery. Visitors and volunteers visited the cemetery this past weekend to pay respects to all the fallen heroes who died protecting this country.

People from all over Korea came to pay a tribute to the deceased patriots at the cemetery.

People make their way up to the boundaries of the grave and brush off the mud on the gravestone and bring out the food they brought for the memorial service.

[Interview : Park Jae-sun, Guest to a Memorial Service] "It's going to be Memorial Day on Wednesday but I have work so I decided to make some time during the weekend to visit the cemetery".

Under the sizzling sun, there are beach umbrellas and tents for families to keep out of the sun.

Along with paying respects to the deceased soldiers, this is also a great time for family and relatives to meet and enjoy each other's company.

[Interview : Kang Suk-jo, Guest to a Memorial Service] "I come here every year for the memorial service and also to make an event my family and relatives to meet".

There were also students from a nearby high school who volunteered to place the Korean flag on each grave and families that went around from grave to grave to re-paint the words on the grave stone.

Another interesting sight to see is the mailbox to heaven, which is a way for people to write letters to patriots who sacrificed their lives for the country.

[Interview : Kim Yu -jin, Volunteer Worker] "This will be a great way to give thanks to the patriots, especially for people like me who could not pay the proper tribute at that time".

It's nice to hear that many of the Korean citizens are making an effort not just during the actual memorial day but the weekend before to pay respects to the deceased soldiers. This shows how much we all care and how much we are grateful for their sacrifice.

[Reporter : ] Exactly. I think this will be a great way to spend this holiday set in the middle of the week. Because it IS kind of an awkward time to go on a long trip, I think it'll be great for people living further away from Daejeon to make a one night trip to the city with your family and relatives and really celebrate this holiday by paying tribute to the people who deserve to be recognized, especially on Memorial Day.

Sounds like a great plan to spend this holiday, and for the other days during this week and for the rest of the month, what else can we do[Reporter : ] Said to be the most successful Broadway musical since the year 2000, the musical "Wicked" has made its grand opening in Korea. Along with the musical, a play protraying the problems during the Pinochet rule in Chile will be performed as well. Take a look at this.

The Broadway musical 'Wicked' shows the friendship and love between an aggressive yet righteous green witch and a lovable yet vain blonde witch.

Through their friendship and love, the story proceeds to talk about corrupt power and discrimination in society, which adds a variety of topics to relate to through the performance.

With Grammy award winning music and advanced stage production, the story shines more brightly beneath the spotlight.

In a town where the people were governed by the military, all of the men suddenly disappear.
The rest of the family wait longingly for their husbands, sons, and fathers until they spot a corpse of a man floating along the river.

As soon as the town people saw this corpse, they began to claim that it was the body of their family member.

The play "Widows" portrays the problems of disappearance and death under suspicious circumstances during the era of the Pinochet rule in Chile.

Lastly, the world renown bestseller 'Tuesdays with Morrie' has been made into a play and will be showing in Korea as well.

The play conveys the conversation between a teacher dying of a terminal illness and a student staying by his side.

[Reporter : ] The musical Wicked will be showing until July 31st, 'Widows' will be showing until the 10th, and 'Tuesdays With Morrie' will be showing until the 17th so be sure to check them out.

I personally think that 'Tuesdays with Morrie' will be a great play to watch, I love watching plays with stories like this so I'm definitely going to check to see if I can reserve tickets.

[Reporter : ] I think the play Widows will be quite interesting as well. I think it'll be cool to see how the story portrays the Pinochet rule in Chile with these widows telling the story.

Sounds like a lot of performances opening this month that will suit all of the fans with different genres so I'm sure a lot of people will be interested. And moving on, you have the events bulletin for us[Reporter : ] Yes I do. I have two music festivals, one, the acoustic blossom music festival and another is the true colors music festa, and a show by Kim Jin Gyu. Here are the details.

[Reporter : ed:mark] This bulletin features 3 events

The Acoustic Blossom Music Festival will be taking place at the Sogang University Mary Hall on June 22nd and the 23rd. The festival will feature artists like Team Kabeto

The True Colors Music Festa will be opening on July 14th and end the next day at Janghang. There will be live bands, djs, dance teams, and performance teams for everyone to enjoy.

Kim Jin Gyu's Original Drawing show will be held at the Welcomm Theater. The audience will be able to enjoy a performance with beautiful drawings telling a story, as the drawing on a single white canvas changes from scene to scene.

Thank you for the update.

[Reporter : ] My pleasure.
