Art and Culture

It's Monday once again and we have previews of arts and culture events with our Michelle Kim. She has a lot of new items for us today, so let's get right down to business.

Hello Michelle

[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So what do you have for us today

[Reporter : ] Well, first I'll tell you about two late summer thrillers in Korea that are keeping film fans on the edge of their seats.

The film "Red Lights" tells the story of two paranormal researchers -- Dr. Margaret Matheson, played by Sigourney Weaver, and her assistant Tom Buckley, played by Cillian Murphy -- as they try to expose fraudulent claims of legendary psychic Simon Silver by finding out more about the phenomena called "red lights".

When Matheson dies suddenly after confronting Silver, it is up to Buckley to continue the investigation on his own. But the evidence he finds increasingly points him away from Silver and back to himself.

Actor Cillian Murphy talked about his character in an interview.

[Interview : Cillian Murphy, Actor] "So called psychics, mentalists, so on and so forth -- they sometimes go on to the field to disprove this paranormal activity"

The film "Neighbors" isn't like other thrillers, where the point of the story is to find out who the killer is. Instead, this film shows us a murder and tells us who the killer is from the beginning. The rest of the film unfolds as the killer's neighbors slowly piece together clues about his identity.

Kim Yunjin from the U.S. TV show "Lost" stars as the mother of the first victim. The film is based on the popular webcomic of the same name by artist Kang Full. Audiences are kept on the edge of their seats as the neighbors come closer to the truth about the man living in their midst.

I think these two films will definitely give us a thrill. I'm especially interested in "Neighbors". The plot sounds really interesting.

[Reporter : ] It certainly does. This film is different from other thrillers because it tells the audience who the killer is from the very beginning. You might think that the most exciting part about watching thrillers is the mystery of finding out who the killer is, but after watching "Neighbors", you might change your mind. I think viewers will be surprised about how much suspense the film creates by showing how the neighbors find clues the audience already knows.

I am not a fan of thrillers, but I may want to try watching this one. It sounds too interesting to be missed. And now moving on, what else do you have for us

And now to wrap things up, you have the events bulletin, right

[Reporter : ] Yes. To switch gears completely, there are thre musicals on the events bulletin today. The musical "You're Beautiful" brings the hit TV drama of the same name to the stage, "Mother, The Memory Show" looks at the relationship between a mother and daughter and "The Marionette" mixes b-boy dancing and a whimsical story. Here are the details.

[Reporter : ed: jenny] This bulletin features 3 events

The drama "You're Beautiful" was a hit with Korean and Japanese viewers in 2009. It has since been made into a musical that is currently showing at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts through September 9th. The show features the talents of a fictional K-pop band called A.N.JELL.

The musical "Mother, The Memory Show" tells the story of a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer's and the daughter who comes back home to take care of her. The story portrays the struggles, joys and sorrows of the mother and daughter as the mother's illness progresses. The show is in an open run at Ellim Hall in Daehangno.

And 63 Art Hall is the venue for a long-running prodution of "The Marionette", a whimsical theatrical performance that mixes music, b-boy dancing and puppetry. The show tells the story of a girl who attends a puppet show and is lured into the magical other world it portrays.
