Art and Culture

2012/09/27 | 164 views | Permalink | Source

And now it's time for our daily arts and culture segment with Michelle Kim. Today, she'll tell us about a few films we can enjoy over the upcoming Chuseok holiday weekend.

Hello Michelle

[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So which films do you have for us today[Reporter : ] Tim Burton is back with a new goth-like animation film called "Frankenweenie". This feature length version of his 1984 short of the same name has gotten a millenial update with high-tech effects. Here's a preview of the film, which will be in theaters in early October.

Tim Burton's remake of his 1984 short "Frankenweenie" hits theaters next month.
Like the original, the remake is both a parody and a homage to Mary Sheeley's Gothic novel "Frankenstein", and tells the story of a young boy who brings his late dog, Sparky, back to life.
This time, however, the film gets an update with stop motion-animation and 3-D effects.
The film is voiced by a list of famous actors, including Martin Landau from "Ed Wood", Catherine O'Hara from "Beetlejuice", Martin Short from "Mars Attacks!" and Winona Ryder from "Beetlejuice and "Edward Scissorhands". Cast members hit the red carpet for the film's premiere in Los Angeles on Monday.
Ryder told the press there how excited she was to work with the director again.

[Interview : Winona Ryder, Actress] "It was a dream come true. He's so special, and I love him so much. I credit him with not only giving me a career but also with giving me a voice, because when I first met him, there weren't characters like that".

In response, Burton praised Ryder for her vocal versatility.

[Interview : Tim Burton, Director] "I hadn't seen her in a long time but she's got that kind of voice where she could still play a 10-year-old. It was great, it meant a lot to me to have people that I've worked with in the past and loved be a part of this".

The film tells the story of a young boy named Victor who uses the power of science to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life -- with a few minor adjustments.
Soon after he resurrects Sparky, however, he begins to realize that the adorable puppy may have turned into a monster.
"Frankenweenie" hits theaters in Korea on Oct. 11th.

Tim Burton's films are always a bit eerie yet are always so well made,.. don't you think[Reporter : ] I feel the same way. From "Edward Scissorhands" to "Corpse Bride", his films always have a bit of a gothic feel.
Burton always gets good reviews and I think this film will also become part of his long list of hit films.

I think so, too. We'll be waiting to check it out. And now, what other movies do you have for us[Reporter : ] There is a whole series of films that have opened just in time for the Chusok holiday weekend. After a couple days with family and friends, sometimes the best thing to do is to catch a movie. Here are a few options.

Ted is nothing like the cute and cuddly teddy bear you might expect. This womanizing bear has a foul mouth and a bad attitude that's enough to turn even the most ardent animal lover off.
He's also the star of the new film of the same name by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, who also stars as the title character.
The film, which follows the sweet yet hilarious relationship between Ted and John Bennett, whose childhood wish brought Ted to life, has already earned more than 200 million dollars in the U.S. alone and is likely to set another record here in Korea after its release today.
"Take This Waltz" will be the only romantic film in theaters for the Chusok holiday.
Michelle Williams plays the role of Margot, who begins to doubt her marriage when she meets Daniel, who could be the man of her dreams.
Williams received positive reviews for her portrayal of a woman wrestling with marriage, love and a decision that will forever change her life.
"Nightfall" is a Hong Kong thriller about a ruthless serial killer and the cop struggling to find him.
Simon Yam, who also starred in the hit Korean film "The Thieves", plays veteran cop George Lam, who tries to find a link between the death of a famous pianist and a killing that happened 21 years ago.

Sounds like a good mix of films to choose from. I think I'm going to go with the romantic film, what about you[Reporter : ] I'm going to see "Ted". First of all, I'd love to see a teddy bear talk and just be absolutely ridiculous. And I want to see how Marky Mark handles his relationship with a bear. This will definitely be one hilarious movie for anyone who needs a good laugh over the holidays.

Sounds great. And now, to wrap things up, you have the events bulletin for us, right[Reporter : ] Yes I do. The awesome, talented and hilarious duo UV will soon be touring Korea, and they're kicking off the tour with a concert in Seoul in October. The rock band Broken Valentine will be performing later in October, and I have the perfect idea for those of you who are starting to make plans for Christmas.

[Reporter : ed: jenny] This bulletin features three events

The singing duo UV, featuring Yoo Sae-yoon and Muzie, will be showing off their musical talents and comedic charms at a concert on October 6th and 7th. The concert is part of a five-city Korea tour that starts in Seoul at Olympic Park Olympic Hall, and moves to Pusan, Gwangju and Daejeon before ending in Daegu on the 28th.

Rock band Broken Valentine will play at Rolling Hall in Hongdae on October 12th and 13th. Each of the days will showcase a different performance style, with the 12th offering an acoustic sound and the 13th offering the explosive energy of rock.

Singer Kim Bum-soo and Park Jung-hyun will be performing at Olympic Park's Gymnastics Stadium from December 23rd to 25th. The two musicians will aim to warm the hearts of their audience with songs about love, peace and the holiday season.

Thank you for the update

[Reporter : ] My pleasure
