Art Film Director Tries New Strategy

2005/05/08 | 115 views | Permalink | Source

Despite becoming a darling of the international festival circuit, director Kim Ki-duk has found little commercial success with his films domestically. So Kim says he will look for a different strategy when it comes to releasing his newest work, "The Bow (Hwal)".

"I realized that outside of feature films with big budgets and famous stars, people in Korea do not go to theaters to watch art films or low budget films", Kim said through an e-mail sent out to the media Friday. "So if billions of won is spent on promotion and many copies of films are made, losing money becomes inevitable given this reality".

However, Kim, director of such films as "
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring" and "3-Iron", said there are still a minority of moviegoers who do go to theaters to see his films. "And for these people, I chose to release the film in a single theater, which I think is the best method".

"The Bow", Kim's 12th work, will open at Cinus G Theater in Kangnam on May 12 and gradually expand the number of theaters depending on its success. The film is set on an island and a boat in front of the island, and tells the love story of a young girl and an old man.

"The Bow" will also screen in the Un Certain Regard, a non-competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, held May 11-22.
