Asian Film Academy 2006 at PIFF: 143 Applicants from 20 Countries Applied for AFA
The result of recruitment in Asian Film Academy (AFA) hosted by Pusan International Film Festival, Dongseo University and Korean Film Academy demonstrated high interests from all over Asia in the program; 143 prospective filmmakers from 20 countries applied for the education project, recording a competition rate of 6 to 1.
AFA is an educational program that prospective filmmakers and experts in Asia prepare for the future of Asian cinema and raise the level of Asian film production through a short film production project, workshops and mentoring. AFA 2006 is the program that takes place for 3 weeks from 29, September to 20, October.
Asian Film Academy launched last year with Hou Hsiao Hsien as dean of AFA together with the faculty of Nonzee Nimibutr, Yurikwai, Park Kiyong and Hwang Kiseok who joined with 28 students from all over Asia. Two short films were produced during the AFA session and were screened at the concurring 10th Pusan International Film Festival.
Looking over the 143 applicants from 20 nations, many fledgling filmmakers applied from varied countries in Asia including Afghanistan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. While half of last year's applicants were from China, Japan and South Korea, this year different countries are represented more evenly with the proportion for the three countries constituting 20% of the total.
Among them, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia sent an increased number of applications. Especially 15 Indonesians applied despite the devastating disaster that took 5857 casualties and wounded 40,000 on May 27th.
Some applicants have made a feature length film before or have been invited to International Film Festival Rotterdam, Berlin International Film Festival, Singapore Film Festivals and/or Female Makes Wave Festival in Taiwan. Many have an experience of producing short films as a multi-role playing director/cinematographer/editor/screen writer. We also noticed applicants with a non-film background such as law, dentistry and engineering, nevertheless with much experience in cinema. Most of all, many applicants have been seriously meditating on their identities as a member of their nation and Asia.
The result of screening was to be announced on June 30th, but the delayed delivery of applicants' film portfolios caused by the earthquake in Indonesia necessitated postponing the announcement. The selected candidates will be announced on AFA website, http://afa.piff.org on July 6th.
AFA Programs
1. AFA short-film project: The Faculty consisting of established film directors and cinematographers from various regions of Asia will help AFA students make their short-films. The students working as a team will write a script and participate in all procedures of filmmaking such as direction, cinematography, lighting and sound recording. The completed work will be screened at the Pusan International Film Festival.
2. Workshops: The workshops will offer an opportunity to work on direction and cinematography using an HD camera at various locations (indoors, outdoors, and studios). The students will learn how to operate an HD camera and will have hands-on experience on effective direction and cinematography.
3. Mentoring: After the announcement of selected students, the students will prepare their film scripts and develop them via e-mail with a member of faculty before AFA begins. The students will continue to work on their scripts during AFA meetings for further improvement through discussion and personal supervisions with the faculty.
4. Lectures: Renowned figures from film industry will deliver lectures on Asian film industry and detailed filmmaking such as editing and screenplay. The lectures will also be an opportunity for the students to reconstruct the identity of Asian cinema as a whole.
5. Scholarship: Various scholarships including Dongseo University's DSU Asian Scholarship Program and KAFA Asian Scholarship Program by Korean Academy of Film Arts will be given with opportunities for further training programs.
