Starting next month, bars and nightclubs will be required to adopt a QR code-based system to keep track of visitors following a resurgence in coronavirus infections in Seoul's party district of Itaewon.

Health officials had faced problems tracking down scores of visitors to several nightclubs in Itaewon.

Nightlife businesses subject to special restrictions will be required to adopt the QR-code system from mid-June, while others can voluntarily do the same.

Visitors to bars and nightclubs must download a one-time QR code issued by Naver or other IT companies and present it at the entrance, where it will be stored in the visitors' log.

The government has promised to tap into the information only if confirmed infections are traced to the establishments. The stored logs will be coded and automatically destroyed after four weeks.

The measure will be implemented for a limited time when the alert is high.
