Both Couples and Singles Want to Avoid Valentine's Day

It seems as though the financial pinch is causing couples to scale down their plans for Valentine's Day.

A recent survey shows that most Koreans would rather avoid the gift-giving that accompanies this celebration of love and romance, which falls next Tuesday.

Public opinion research company Gnos R&C surveyed around 300 unmarried people and asked them what elements of the special day they would rather skip. Surprisingly, the top answer given by 24.4 percent of the respondents was that they would ideally forego the day altogether.

People who were not in a relationship said they wished Valentine's Day would disappear because it makes them feel depressed. Meanwhile, those with romantic partners said they feel financially burdened by having to present another gift so soon after Christmas.

Additionally, 19.8 percent of the respondents said they most hoped to avoid the long lines at crowded restaurants on the day, especially if they forget to make reservations ahead of time. The third-most cited pet hate was dates who spoil a romantic night out on the day by showing up late (13.3 percent), followed by those who said they feared being spurned by the object of their desire after presenting them with chocolates (6.7 percent), and would happily skip this unpleasant experience.

"It is interesting to learn that both couples and singles feel similar pressure on Valentine's Day", said the research firm.
