Chinese Blast 2 Historical Korean Dramas

Chinese have criticized two Korean TV dramas about the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo.

The Chinese government has banned the airing of "Taewangsashingi" ("The Legend") and "Jumong", both of which deal with sensitive historical issues between China and the two Koreas. China has also blocked all media reports on the two dramas.

The Hong Kong newsweekly Yazhou Zhoukan said Chinese viewers have criticized Jumong -- a drama about the founding king of Goguryeo -- as distorting history. Several Chinese Web sites have called the series anti-Chinese.

"Taewangsashingi" will start airing in September, and is also about Goguryeo, namely the dynasty's King Gwangaeto the Great.

The weekly said, however, that the so-called Korean Wave, or the boom of Korean pop culture in Asia, is not part of a cultural invasion, and that rising Korean interest in China will bring expanded regional cooperation and cultural integration over the long term.
