An international festival of comics and animations opens Thursday at the Ilmin Museum of Art in Chongno, downtown Seoul, and continues until Aug. 13.

Titled "Dong-A, LG International Festival of Comics & Animation", this annual event celebrates its 10th year with richer programs in three sections _ the prizewinners from the festival's competition section, Korean comics and international comics.

Over 1,300 works from 30 different countries were submitted to the four categories in the competition section _ comics, cartoons, character design and animation _ and among them, about 90 have been selected for a prize and final round.

The first winner at the character design category is "Fanta-Mong" by Cho Young-sung and Jung Min-jung, who created a dreamy world by combining computer graphics and hand drawings.

Choi Hyun-myeong's "Walking in the Rainy Day" won first place in the animation category, which uses only black and white to add many Korean touches. The story is about a girl who meets a mysterious yet funny frog on a rainy day.

Pawel Kuczynski's "Comb", the first prizewinner in the cartoon category, wittingly portrays a baldhead and broken comb, an unmatchable combination that succeeds in producing laughter.

In "The Fly" by Park Kyoung-bae, the first prizewinner in the comics category explores the issues of the disabled in society through broken robots.

In the Korean Comics section, works by Korean artists who became famous through the festival will be displayed, and in the International Comics section, light will be shed on Swiss comics.

The entrance fee is 4,000 won. The venue is near exit 5 of Kwanghwamun station on subway line 5. For more information, call (02) 2020-0736 or visit http://www.difeca.com
