Consumers' New Preferences in Chuseok Holiday Gift Boxes

With Chuseok, one of the country's biggest holidays, just two weeks away, people are starting to think about what gifts to give to their friends and acquaintances.
Amid generally rising prices in the country, Korean beef sets have actually dropped in price compared to last year.

[Interview : Park Gwang-young, Seoul resident] "As prices rose too much, fruit gift sets are now too expensive. I am thinking of buying a meat set as a gift instead".

According to a large retailer, advance sales of Korean beef gift sets during the middle of August rose more than five times from the same period in 2010.

[Interview : Nam Kook-hyun, Director of a large retailer] "Korean beef gift sets are expected to be the top sellers. We are preparing 20 to 30 percent more beef sets than usual".

Meanwhile, the popularity of fruit gift baskets for Chuseok has decreased due to soaring fruit prices.
Some apples and pears could not even be shipped as the country's record rainfall during the summer seriously damaged this year's harvest.

With the fall harvest holiday this year falling about 10 days earlier than usual, consumers' preferences for Chuseok gift boxes is also showing a different trend.
