D-War attracts over 2.2 million in four days

2007/08/05 | 89 views | Permalink | Source

The science fiction blockbuster "D-War" attracted 792,000 viewers Saturday alone to reach a figure of 2.2 million viewers in its first four days of release, spawning expectations that the Korean legend-based film starring Hollywood actors might set a new box office record, the distributor of the film said Sunday.

The number of viewers is one of the highest in Korean film history with the movie "The Host" having shown similar statistics last year. The monster movie Host has attracted a record 13 million plus viewers.

D-War, made by a comedian-turned movie director Shim Hyung-rae, will likely be viewed by more than 3 million within the first week after premiere to surpass the record held by the Host, an official of ShowBox said, attributing the film's success to computer graphics which are said to match those of Hollywood sci-fi products.

The $30 million film, the most expensive in Korea, is to be shown on 1,700 screens in the United States in September, the widest ever U.S. release for a Korean film, according to the official.
