Daegu International Airport is proving a much better choice as a gateway to Korea than Incheon if travelers want to go somewhere other than Seoul.
Located in the middle of the country, Daegu is the ideal hub from which to travel anywhere in Korea, and travel volume is increasing rapidly.
As many as 338,738 passengers took international flights through Daegu last year, up 57.3 percent from 215,341 the year before.
Routes are being added all the time. On April 6, T'way Air launched three flights per week between Daegu and Vladivostok. The budget carrier also put on more flights on some existing routes, from six to seven per week between Daegu and Cebu, from three to seven per week between Daegu and Hong Kong, from four to five per week between Daegu and Okinawa, and from 11 to 14 per week between Daegu and Osaka.
Jeju Air will launch three flights a week between Daegu and Beijing on April 27, and T'way Air will put on three flights a week between Daegu and Shanghai during the summer. China Eastern Airlines has already increased weekly flights from four to seven between Daegu and Shanghai.
There are direct flights from Daegu to major Japanese airports such as Tokyo, Sapporo, Osaka, Okinawa, and Fukuoka. Travelers can also take direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Sanya, Taipei, and Hong Kong, as well as Bangkok and Da Nang.
That makes it an ideal gateway for destinations in Korea like Busan or the historic sites of North Gyeongsang Province.
Daegu has promised to improve terminals and parking lots as passenger numbers surpass the airport's 3.75 million capacity this year.
