Im Kwon-taek, one of South Korea's most prolific and revered film directors, will oversee programs for this year's Asian Film Academy (AFA) to be held for three weeks on the sidelines of the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF).

Im succeeds Hsiao-hsien Hou, a Taiwanese film director who served as head of the academy last year when it was initiated with the 10th PIFF.

AFA is aimed at enhancing the level of Asian filmmaking by selecting talented future directors and encouraging them in the making of short films and workshop attendance.

For this year, 143 applications were received from 20 countries, according to the PIFF officials. A total of 24 participants from 19 countries were selected.

Other than Im, Kazakh film director Darezhan Omirbayev, Japanese cinematographer Kenji Takama and Korean film director Bae Chang-ho will also teach at the academy.

The PIFF organizing committee, Dongseo University and the Korean Academy of Film Arts are co-organizing the academy.
