Ditch the Uggs, Doctors Advise

Ugg-style boots are a popular winter wardrobe item thanks to their warmth and cozy feel, but doctors advise against wearing them for extended periods as this can damage the feet and other parts of the body.

Ugg-style boots have wide, cushioned soles, which make the wearer feel comfortable. The soles, however, are completely flat, leaving the arch of the foot unsupported. The wearer's feet and ankles absorb the full impact as contact is made with the ground. This can cause plantar fasciitis, resulting in chronic foot pain.

"Calf-length Ugg-style boots don't properly protect the ankles, so it's easy to sprain the ankle on a slippery road, or develop tiredness in the legs", said Jeon Tae-hwan at Dongtan City Hospital in Gyeonggi Province. "Repeatedly walking in this condition not only harms the ankles but also damages the knees and hips".

While avoiding such footwear altogether is advised, those who cannot part with their Uggs should place ice or hot packs on their feet after removing the boots. Raising the feet above the level of the heart while sleeping is also recommended to facilitate blood circulation. This reduces swelling of the feet and relieves fatigued joints. A simple way to do this is to place a pillow under the legs.
